70 series gearbox woes (

Hi,
I am having some bearing (humming noise) that appears to becoming from the
gearbox, whilst in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear.
The noise get proggresivly worse the faster you go, its definlty coming from
the gear box area, and gets more noticeable once vehicle/gearbox has warmed
up.
Has anyone had anything similair happen?
Could it be related to the clutch as this appears to be on the way out as
well?
Before dismantling the box has anyone got any suggestions?
The noise disappears if I lift my foot of the throttle or put the clutch in,
and only becomes noisy when in 3rd and above.
Thanks in advance.
Martin.

Hi Martin,
Could it be the rear UJ on the propshaft? Worth checking.
Also have you checked the gearbox oil recently, what is the quality like?
Anything on the drain plug?

HI Julian,
Thanks for you reply, I check the UJ at the weekend and let you know how I
progress...
Also I will drain the oil and see what its like, hopefully no mud and water
has got in :)
Another question:
Does anyone know if the gearbox out of an LJ70(F reg, old round light model)
is the same that=92s in a KZJ70 (KZ-T engine, M Reg, 1995)?
I have tried searching the web for info but cannot seem to find much on the
rarer KZJ70?
Thanks
Martin.

Hi Martin
I doubt it-these are the same bodies but different engines( 2.4 and 3.0) so
I think the gearboxes won't fit...
cheers

Hi,
Dropped the gearbox out at the weekend the UJ's look ok, my friend has
opened the box up and confirmed the worst, water in all the bearings.
He is busy rebuilding it with new bearings etc... this week and also its
having a new clutch as its wearing.
It looks like the water has entered the box from the breather at the top.
(It did go UP a stream for about 100-50 Metres, up to the bonnet :). The
breather is a one-way valve and looks pretty pathetic.
I will be running 2(think there is one on the transfer) rubber pipes from
the gearbox/transfer up the edge of firewall somewhere. Also going to do the
same with DIFF's.
If anyone has any gotcha's on this, please let me know.
For instance i have heard/read somewhere that the oil/gas that comes from
the gearbox up the pipe is quite toxic/corrosive? Will a rubber pipe do? Am
I going to be intoxicated whilst driving :) ?
If all goes well a friend in his LJ70 and myself(KZJ0) will be attending
Salisbury Plains(We need fill the form out I guess, Julian?)
Regards
Martin.
