Hi all!

In the last year I have restored a Mercedes Westfalia campervan and travelled through North-America in it. During this build I found lots of helpful tips on this forum. It is now time to become a more active members and contribute to the Land Cruiser knowledge database.

In this topic I will be sharing the progress of my Land Cruiser 78.

What will I use it for?

- Trips through Europe, Scotland, Iceland, Norway and eventually a trip to Mongolia.

What is my goal for the build?

- I want a simple but practical build, not making the cruiser to heavy and keeping its great 4x4 qualities.

I picked up the cruiser a week ago and started stripping it, I want to be sure I won’t miss any rust spots.

other planned fixes:
-New exhaust
-Getting the dent out of the rear door so i can open it properly.

This is its current state: IMG_2755.jpg 7AC30251-2EA3-4003-A659-3FA7B69DC9D7.JPG 7ECB4DBD-E1F2-42C3-9539-3D735BBFB389.JPG 7F5BDC7F-D15A-4B37-A3D0-4543245AEB8B.JPG 094CBB4C-E55E-48F5-8C4F-7E8563F4412B.JPG 361C853F-30D3-4046-BC6E-5225811C2B00.JPG 849B06D0-7292-4ACB-9896-9F88DC6CDFA7.JPG 4952FB90-B8F7-4F10-B43D-1193832ED528.JPG D2F26D8A-1FB7-497A-ABC3-E00D9C57A5F6.JPG E1843DE0-9702-4A79-A6C9-74F459B604DE.JPG

The last couple of days I have been busy removing doors, bumpers, lights etc. I have also started to clean the rust of the chassis. Found another couple nasty rust spots:

I've a new long range Frontrunner tank that may fit your troopy if you're interested?

I cant seem to be able to send you a PM.

One or 6 more posts, and you should be good.

With the rust, check the firewall - I used to work with some mid 1980's Troopys and utes, and they all leaked at the firewall in the rain...

Any spot specifically? Mine is a august 2001 model.

I used to find it when it rained! It leaked onto the drivers clutch foot if I remember correctly... only found out because I'd drive them wearing flip flops, whereas most of the others would wear boots.

Thanks, will have a look at it tomw!

I'm talking about RHD ones, so the leak might be near the transmission tunnel.

You might need more posts in the forum to send a message.

I have 2 that may fit, and a universal tank.

The two are for 70 series (possibly 76/70 series). One is an 160l replacement long range, the second is an additional 80l long range tank.

The universal tank is a 140l.

I'm in Wales, UK.

I will send you a PM as soon as the forum will let me ;)! For now i am focussing on this rust. Thanks for the offer, appreciated.

Hey Pesca, did you buy the truck from René in Gouvy in the Belgian Ardennes?

Made some more progress today, started with removing the paint to be able to cut out the rust and weld in new panels. Also started on the base-layer protection for the chassis.

Btw interesting workshop. Would love to see a pic of the red one behind your truck with the TEX license plate.

They have some interesting stuff for sale

Another day, besides finding some more rust , I have removed the side windows and cleaned the body to be sanded.
