Hi ... firstly let me say I am absolutely NEW to the forum and also to Landcruisers.

Always had a hankering for one though and felt pretty fortunate to get a decent 80 4.2TD Manual...unfortunately (for me) 2 weeks after I got it I had the 'click' of death..
..yes the highly expensive 'engine relay voltage converter' ... so with a potential bill around £700 I did a quick search on here for advice.
Reading all the replys to the related thread convinces me to convert to the 12v ...for many reasons now ...albeit the money was a big enough one.

Could anyone please guide me as to WHICH starter to buy which will fit ... and also any other relavant mods I should make.

The Landcruiser is 1993 HDJ80 4.2td MANUAL

....would much appreciate the assistance to get me back on the road.

So is it the HDJ100 starter the one to get? ..and is the connector the only mod required?

NO, do not do that. A few years back when I was contemplating 'dumping the 24v starter' there was a lot of negative comments, this was mainly from people who felt no one should dare interfere with the mystique of having a 24 volt starting system, it was defended like the Holy Grail!

Of course they could have been right, and I did not want to put up the cash and get a starter and find it did not work. I concluded the HDJ 100 12v starter should suffice but, the starter dog is a different size and if you swap the one from the 24v starter it does not retract far enough back into the starter body, leaving it in contact with the flywheel. It is necessary to dremel out enough of the front of the body to allow the gear to retract cleanly, I did this and it works fine. I got the starter for nothing, and it cost nothing to mod and fit, the HDJ 100 starter is 3kw to boot!

You can get the proper 12v starter for this now, have a shop around as the prices vary quite considerably, when mine gives up I will simply fit the correct 12v version although I think it is a mere 2.5kw compared to the 4.5kw the 24v churns out?

Unless you have a genuine reason to do this I would not bother, I needed to simplify the starting process and also need space for an extra battery or two!

As i mentioned in my first post the relay has gone west and a new one is quoted as 455 plus vat...additionally

it would appear to be more practical for jump starting.

Could you posible point me in the right direction as tp where I can buy the correct 12v replacement?

Other searches I've done get you to filter through to your model/engine/etc ...and then I'm effectively back to asking for a new 24v starter because that's what I have???

It may well do for their 100, I can assure you the 100 I had would not bolt straight in, in fact the link Garfieldus offered clearly shows the drive dog is recessed. I had to create that recess using the dremel.

Just dug out a couple of pictures for comparison sake, the larger dog is the 24v 80 (4.5kw), the other, a 2001 HDJ100 (3.0 kw).

You can also see the 'stop' face had to be removed as well, other than minor adjustments to the solenoid push rod this was a great success. The second hand starter was a mess, I had bought it off ebay and when it arrived I sent the seller a video of the insides (I still have it) and it was a real mess, he refunded my money as soon as ebay staff saw the video rather than have a dispute opened, unsure if he felt I was about to roll over and take one for him?

Welcome Charlie.

You could buy a second hand changeover relay cheaply. It takes about 10 min to fit with a 10mm and a 12mm socket and an extension.

If you have your heart set on the 12v starting then that's a nice mod and you wouldn't have an issue in the future.

Just wanted to let you know you have a cheap fix solution if needed.

Hi Karl... ..thanks for your comments ..you wouldn't happen to know where I can get a second hand cheap one would you? That would sort me in the short term..
 
@Bat21, looks like the right one but that price appears to be plus vat right? Looks expensive if it is, circa 280 quid?

Ooh Dave, looks like you're right. It is the right one but at £280 it makes it not so appealing.
 
Hi, sorry to be obtuse, but what is the item in question? Is it the relay that sits on the inside wing of the engine compartment near side? Thanks

Bill, I believe the one you are referring to is the heater plug relay if it's the one in a sealed can a bit like a corned beef tin. The one referred to is behind the LH battery (as from the drivers view), I think in front of the fuel filter assembly with approximately a 4"x 3" black plastic cover. It has several of the heaviest cables on the vehicle going to it.
