Hi All,
I'm trying to establish what final drive (a.k.a. differential, a.k.a. ring
and pinion) ratios came on european spec 80 series. I'd like to be able to
re-gear my cruiser to run 35" tyres and still tow a car trailer without
frying the clutch.
Standard ratios from the factory were 3.727 (41 teeth on the ring, 11 on the
pinion) and 4.10 (41 teeth on the ring, 10 on the pinion).
All cruisers have an axle code on the build plate found on the bulkhead in
the engine bay. The code for diff-lock equipped axles is K304 for the 3.7
ratio diffs and K294 for the 4.1s. It will be in the middle of a row of
other codes for engine, transmission body colour etc.
I know that my manual 1990 HDJ80 has 3.7 ratio diffs. Someone at Toyota GB
is trying to tell me that all UK spec 80 series had 4.1's. I've a suspicion
that maybe manual cars had 3.7s but automatics had 4.1s.
Can anyone look at their build plate and see what axle code they have?
Hopefully this might establish an accurate picture.
Thanks in advance,
Toby
