Hi,

My brother has a 98 90 series that has just dipped the MOT for a cat. He has been told that a new one will cost £1200 and the car is not worth getting fixed, although it has been well looked after. So a few questions.

Does anyone know of a cheaper supplier of cat's for the 90?

Will the seats from a 90 fit an 80?

Might it be worth breaking for parts?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I have answered this one with a bit of research. Cats are avail., even universal ones, a lot cheaper. The seats are different. The car is not worth the hassle of breaking, even though it is in good nick.

When you say failed "for a cat", what do you mean - emissions? Hole in the exhaust? Something else?

- Try a different MOT place?
- Throw some injector cleaner in the fuel tank - these fluids seem to yield lower emissions reading than just straight fuel.
- Buy a 2nd hand cat from a breaker (Karl or Stef on here)

Good luck!

Just remember if you do change the cat don't let the garage "dispose" of the old one for you. I currently get £40 per cat from my local scrap merchants as they contain some sought after metals like platinum and palladium, amongst others.
