[ADMIN] ELCO move to Forums???

G

Guest

Guest
Morning Again,
I have been hoping at some point to move this list over to web based
forums that also provide mailing list functionality, however am
struggling to find the time to put into the development of the
software.
I think in order for the group to move forward we do need to move to
Forums - a lot of newcomers to the web over the last few years seem to
struggle with mailing lists.
I know that a lot of 'old timers' on the web prefer mailing lists,
however what would you feel if we went over to forums?
I need to move the site and list in the next few weeks and would be
looking to setup the forums around the same time.
So what are your views?
On the forums front I would be looking to setup sections to cover the
different models as well as specific subject areas like overlanding,
green laning, etc.
All being well I should be able to copy all the old messages from the
list across to the forums to get the ball rolling.

hi Fred,
i had thought about that, but there is so much google clutter and you would
have to have seperate lists for each series that it will put people off.

why would you have separate lists for each series? since i am always looking
at different cruisers i enjoy that the list is a landcruiser list and not
just an 60, 80 or 100 list. i would rather be able to search one list (or
one archive of emails) than dick around with half a dozen.
overland .co. za uses google, has large email traffic, and it also allows
for documents to be stored online (would be great for pdf manuals, trip
reports etc). i currently have that on email so that it drip feeds content
all day long - when i go away i'll just turn off the emails (and access
threads online) rather than unsub completely.

I for one would hate it and, sadly (for me, but probably no great loss
to anyone else), fall away.
I have an email programme running all the time, so ELCO posts wind up in
their folder and I can look at them when I want with the massive energy
expenditure of a single click.
However I find that forums (fora?) require a lot more time and effort,
and require one to be pro-active, so as a result I don't get round to
using them.
To give you an example: we have an intranet at work, where everyone is
desk-bound with access to a computer, so various people set up forums
and discussion groups, etc. The whole lot withered on the vine because
we were all simply too busy to participate, whereas I exchange umpteen
emails a day with my colleagues around the world.
I also find my email archive extremely useful since I can search it
locally, and hence rapidly, on my machine by keyword to find that
discussion I vaguely remember reading 2 or so years ago ...
Maybe I'm just a technological dinosaur! (Who gets that warm Jurassic
feeling when he looks into his LC80's engine compartment and sees the
almost complete absence of electronics)

I agree with Chris' view 100%.
I also like the cross pollination of different LC models and
activities all on one list. OK, I'm not into Overlanding, but I'm
interested to read about those who are. If a thread is of no
interest, I can simply skip past it.
I understand your reasoning behind a web-based list, it will be more
publicly visible and might well grow faster, but quantity is not
always good for quality.
Either way, I'd stick around, but I prefer an email list.

I have mixed feelings. I use some forums and have at times spend a lot of

I probably don't use the forums "properly", I don't often subscribe to
threads but I do find the searches are quite good, perhaps not at good as
searching your own stored emails which are likely to be "pre-filtered" to
your interests.
I have noticed that traffic on many email lists is on the decline so perhaps
it's a case of the writing being on the wall and critical mass being lost on
many lists.
The allure of pictures is another consideration.

Hi Julian
For what its worth.
I like the e-mail closness of the chat and up dates from all the guys who do
post.
Im not the best at the tech stuff and even struggle with simple mechanical
stuff because unless I see or do it several times I have lost the know how.
But Its nice to have the info come to you when you want it and even the
stuff that does not concern you directly, you can always learn from it.
It would be nice to have all the recent e-mails come as they are or as
blocks of recent posts if you know what i mean.
But it would be nice to have a storage site or forum where you can access
certain info on a perticular item or subject aswell, with easy access
/subject matter/cruiser devided/specials like mods, overlanding,sites of
interest, where to get stuff and how etc etc.
Even be able to load photos of all our cruisers and our ugly mugs but not
lose the personal touch that makes us well me anyway feel comfortable and
know people even if I have not meet them yet.

Chris/Jeremmy,
OK you old stick in the muds.
I take your points, however....
I've never been a fan of forums, but once you have logged in, you can
dip in and out when you feel like it, no need to subscribe/unsubscribe
when you go on hols, etc.
I use Firefox as my main browser and have 3-4 tabs permanently open on
various forums - I just go to the tab, refresh it and then see if there
are any new messages of interest.
If organised with various extensions, you can lock the tabs is so they
always appear when you load Firefox - I think you can do the same for
IE and other browsers now.
On the google front the web interface is pretty poor and it is
difficult to track threads on busy days with the home page only listing
8 threads.
I have contemplated having just one forum, however many viewers will be
after model specific information and won't want to wade through 90% 80
series info to find info on a 40 series or 90 series, splitting them up
will make it much easier to follow.
Don't forget that both of you are old hands at the IT side of things,
most users struggle - we probably loose at least 2 potential users a
week because we are mail based.

you misunderstand me - i like the current setup, it is exactly the same as
the overland email system, however, they have the advantage that with the
google groups thing all threads are backed up and available online - with a
few bells and whistles such as files being able to be uploaded.
it also allows you to administer all your subscriptions in one place which
is very user friendly.

I think I'm outvoted here, and I'm also acutely aware that you fund this
list and, to some extent, it is your livelihood; so you go with what you
think is best.
I suppose you are right in that with Outlook (which I hate!) running
things just automatically pop into folders based on rules, but when I
think of the problems I had weaning my wife away from "everything stays
in the Inbox" syndrome on her email I can see your point. (I'm not sure
how well she would handle tabbed browsing in Firefox though...)
Maybe you could find a forum that delivers a daily email digest for we
Luddites. (And which handles HTML therein gracefully!)

Well I'm not fussed which way it goes.
To some extent it would be good to grow the list, but there again I
like the dedicated group that we have here already.
I'll await futher feedback from others on the list and also spend a
little time dusting off my forum software and then see where we go from
there.
I'm not going to do anything straight away, just really testing the
waters.

I would echo these comments.
I post a lot on forums, but haevn't used TLOCUK or ih8mud too much as the
ELCO list just seems, friendlier?
A huge benefit of forums is that you don't get a huge amount of information
delivered to your mail box that you just don't want- I find the relatively
large number of emails that ELCO produces to be offputting and only
perservere with it because of the information on it- I much prefer the ease
of use of a forum.
Some forums can use RSS feeds which imo are much more succesful tahtn email
feeds- certainly more versatile.
Julian perhaps you might like to pop over to forums.lr4x4.com to have a look
at quite a succesful community forum!
I'd be happy to help moderate or administrate a forum if you need a hand?

I prefer forums and the additional facilities they offer for picture
hosting, searching etc. I'm much more likely to post on a forum about
subjects that may or may not be of interest to others, because I know it's
not being forced on all the subscribers of a list. I have a few projects
underway at the moment that seem like good sources of discussion for the
few who are happy cutting and welding bits of their 80 but I wouldn't want
to burden the whole ELCO audience with them.
I could post them on ih8mud or tlocuk but I've been holding out for the
ELCO forum ;-)

Yes please do go forums. Look how Yahoo forums does it, you can get
email from each poster too!

I guess the list is fine if you are in front of a computer a lot of the time

Been a warm day so time for a cool beer I think. Hope everyone is well.
