[ADMIN] Future of ELCO - Please read!!

Hi All,
Over the last few years a number of people have approached me about
moving ELCO away from being a mailing list to using forums.
Personally I'm not a great fan of them, but can see their benefits and
realise that if we moved to them the membership will suddenly rocket
which obviously has advantages and disadvantages.
Many of you are aware of the Land Cruiser forums at TLOC and many of
you are members there. You will probably also have picked up on the
fact that several of the members at TLOC aren't happy with the way that
it is being run and so they have splintered off to forum a new club
with new forums.
I have now reached a point when I really don't have the time to spare
on building ELCO and I am also getting nudges (he's a friend so they
don't hurt!) from my hosting service to move to either other mailing
list software or forums.
Now I could move ELCO over to other mailing list software, but in this
day and age most new members struggle to get to grips with the nuances
of mailing lists so I suspect the club will just continue to remain
quite quiet.
I have been looking at some software that provides combined mailing
list and forum software and apart from really crappy sales staff not
ringing me back, I get the impression that the software will be quite
expensive.
SO this leads me to conclude that in order for ELCO to survive I really
do think it needs to move to straight forums.
Now I could move ELCO over to forums myself, but then we have the issue
who is going to run it.
Combined with the lack of time, since I run a Land Cruiser business I
think there is a major conflict of interest, so it would be good to get
others on board to help out.
So, this brings me back to the 'splinter' club - I have suggested to
them that they merge with ELCO, well actually take over ELCO.
The suggestions is that we link through to their forums and all members
past and present are then given the opportunity to sign up to them.
Eventually after a couple of months the ELCO mailing list will be
closed.
All the messages going back to 2004 when we setup ELCO would be
archived on the new forums.
I would continue to be involved in running the new club, but in a much
diluted capacity and I would also continue to organise the weekend
events, push on the PR front, etc.
The only sticking point at the moment is the name. The splinter club
is called simply 'Land Cruiser Club' or 'LCC' - obviously I would
prefer to see them adopt the more established ELCO monica.
If it doesn't work out, I probably will crack on with moving ELCO over
to forums unless I can strike a good deal for the combined mailing
list/forum software.
At the end of the day it is really up to you guys and girls. So, if
you have any thoughts on the matter, please let me know either posting
here or by giving me a call.
I'll b e making some announcements in the next few days about the next
ELCO Weekend (the weekend after easter!!) and would like to combine ith
with an announcement about the club's future.
So either drop me a line or give me a call. I am pretty busy over the
weekend (particularly the evenings) otherwise you can call me on the
number below.
I look forward to hearing from you.

The ELCO list has been very quiet over the past few months. I have joined
up with the new Land Cruiser Club having been a member of TLOC. One of the
problems with TLOC is the administrator appears to have no real interest in
Cruisers, TLOC is just one of the forums he runs. Land Cruiser Club (
http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forum ) on the other hand is actually run by
people who own, use and enjoy Cruisers.
My vote goes for merging ELCO into the Land Cruiser Club and running on
their forum.
Cheers
Ian

Julian,
I am one of those that has asked aboutforums before, I think it
is a more modern and user friendly way to go. As you say, it will
attract more members. I do not know the people on the LCC forum (you
are right about the name being naff) but I am sure they are OK. The
main reservation about the LCC is why the split, there are always
dissenters that do the "I will do this my way and it will be better
(or more what I want)" thing, they are usually short lived when the
work takes over.
If a vote is needed I would go for changing this list to a forum,
second would be am amalgamation.
Should we go to a forum and you need help then I am sure I could
spare some time, I am reasonably computer literate.

You have done a fantastic job getting to where we are now.
I'll follow whatever you feel is the best direction.
I'm not against moving to forums as long as the option is available to
have a digest list etc..

I would like to see ELCO merge with the new LCC forum, but i think that the
ELCO identity should be kept. I don't know how that will work in practise,
but im sure there is a way. I personally find lists are awkward to use
especially if you want find old topics, so the progression to a forum based
environment seems logical IMO.
Regarding the split being a short term thing, it definitely is not.
As Ian said LCC is run and owned by the community and there are plenty of
people willing to contribute in running the forum.

I think that the merge would be a good thing=2C it would launch both camps into a new era=2C run by and managed by like minded Landcruiser owners. The LCC is a strong community all be it small at the moment as is the ELCO community and if the ELCO name and its world wide recognition can be kept it could only bring more like minded people together.
I am all for it lets look to the future with open arms.

Hi
I have only been a member of ELCO for about 6 months and to this point I have never posted.
I would like to say that I am a member of landcruiserclub.net, since it started (about a week)
I feel the need to say that the group of people who use this form are a great bunch of people who have helped me tremendously with my Cruiser
I think you will find them a very welcoming bunch, with what seems like an encyclopedic knowledge of all thinks Land Cruiser
As to the name ELCO is pretty cool, but I really don't mind one way or the other
Cheers

Hi y'all
I'm no expert but I agree with Ian; namely merging with the LCC; we're the
guys (and gals) who use (and abuse) our Toyo babies regularly - and we all
thoroughly enjoy the buzz too.
Thinking back, I realised that I'd joined pretty much at the beginning of
the formation of ELCO! So I'm a bit biased, anyway.

Hi all,
I read everything relevant that comes my way and when I have had a problem
or can help another, I chip in.
Owning an FJ40 does mean that I'm one of few in the UK, so I guess it would
be better to be able to potentially read more posts of direct interest, but
that's not to say I don't like reading about other LC's.
Regarding the name, I don't think it matters all that much, but it would be
good that all Julian's hard work should in some way be recognised.
Best,
Steve Ackhurst

I like the idea of forums, mostly because you can search and find older
threads and people can add to the threads year on year.
I would like to see the ELCO name go on but I could understand if a forum
started as LCC wanted to stay that.
It would be a shame to loose your input Julian, events have conspired
against my getting to an ELCO event but it is clear that without you putting
things together those events wouldn't have happened, on the other hand I am
sure there would be nothing to prevent the events continuing and developing
particularly if you were involved.
The conflict of interest hasn't been an issue, solely because you have made
sure it isn't, being free of ELCO might be beneficial to your business
interests in the long term.
I registered for the LCC forum last night - I was impressed that the
registration required the username be first name and lastname - the lack of
anonymity does reduce the rubbish on a forum, unfortunately a very quick
look at the postings shows not all the posters use the username format.
That is also somewhat understandable because the forum is open to the world.
To me that is the main difference between lists and forums - posting a
mobile number on ELCO isn't the best thing to do but posting it on a forum
would be daft.
It will be a shame to see the list disappear - LCML traffic is almost nill
and ELCO has reduced, but it would be worse to see the people using the list
fragmented across a number of average forums.

Malcolm

I understand about the time commitment.
However, I'd be very sad if ELCO were to change format, I like the
list exactly and precisely as it is. One of the main reasons I like it
is that I get pertinant and relevant info sent straight to me inbox
without all of the annoying rubbish that forums generate.
A forum also requires one to actually log in and read - I have
received much useful information and many bright ideas from the list
that I would never have had the idea to ask about in the first place,
I most certainly would never have searched a forum for some of the
excellent information that I've received here.
It's also sometimes very comforting in a strange way, to see messages
from fellow listers pop up in my inbox even if I don't actively use
the info. This would not happen with a forum.
However, I understand - if it has to change then so be it. Many thanks
for all your help and for running the list over the years.
It will be a very great shame if it does have to change though, like
the loss of a very old friend. I like it just the way it is.
Thanks Julian.

I'm with Pete on this one, I find forums much more time consuming than email
lists, so don't end up visiting very often.
However, as we seem to be in the minority with this view, I'd think that
merging with the newly formed Landcruiser Club would make much more sense
than starting yet another new forum?
Either way, a big thank you to Julian for starting ELCO...

Folks,
We are busy with a change to the existing site which will summarise the
daily activity and email it to you when you like. Every hour, daily, weekly
etc. What you want summarised is up to you as well.
You cannot reply to this summaryalthough I am looking into something like
this. i.e. You might be able to reply to an email and it is then merged with
the thread. Don't hold your breath on this one though. :(
While the digest is not perfect, it does allow some benefit. :)
I'll let people know once it is working.

Crispin

Hello all,
There are a number of advantages to a mailing list. However I do not believe
that he sum of these is greater than the parts.
The single most useful thing about a forum over a list is the facility to
search or browse through the history of comments.
If any community is to grow it must bend over backwards to help its
newcomers.

Yes Paul is right but you donn't want somebody behind you when you bend over=2C we know what can happen !

If any community is to grow it must bend over backwards to help its newcomers.

Sorry . Sent that prematurely instead of saving it to my drafts folder for
completion later. Another disadvantage of mailing lists!
What I was wanting to say is that of mailing list is if now use to a
newcomer. They need to able to browse and read a forum for ideas.
The best solution I am quite sure would be to merge Julian's history of
posts into a forum and if the platform that is currently being used doesn't
support a daily digest then just change it to one that does.

Hi
As you all know ELCO has been a true life line to me and I'm sure it has provided the same very factual information to you all as well.
I have enjoyed the sense of humour that most have while trying to explain to me the ins and outs of a landcruiser.
I have learned so much through out the years from the guys who know, and enjoy helping others.
I think I would have burned out the cruiser a long time ago without all your help.
I have to say I now consider myself very lucky to have been part of the process even though I can be annoying at times by asking too many questions, I have learned so much.
I also have to say I have enjoyed meeting so many nice people on the weekends that Julian organized and having a bit of craic.
I like the mailing list because it is so simple to use, just an e-mail and your off.
The messages come to you direct in your inbox and its up to you to delete or store what you want.
I completely understand all the other comments and am delighted Julian is doing so well.
I think it would be a awful shame to see ELCO disappear.
I would like to be able to search the list for items that I have forgot/ lost or now need information on.
If keeping ELCO going is going to be time consuming for Julian then maybe its pressure he can do without.
It would be nice to keep going as ELCO and be able to look back or search.
Or it might be good to be part of new list but keep the ELCO identity, the best of both worlds really.
By having a choice to link into the new list and or ELCO which would be great, or am I talking crap.
I like the idea of getting the information sent to me and not just the posts I participate in, because there is useful info that I can learn from even though I did not ask for it.
I do like the forum idea because of the ability to be able to search but unless you know what you are searching for it can be time consuming and some threads maybe cant be replied to because of a time restraint.
Anyway no matter what is decided thanks a million Julian and others for your time and patience.
Cheers
john

I use email all the time, and find forums a pain in the bum because you
have to log into them, whereas my emails "just appear". Searching
within my email archive is easy enough as well.
Also I don't know what it is about forums but unpleasantness seems more
common. Maybe it is down to the ability to hide behind pseudonyms that
others have commented upon, although my theory is that the seven dwarfs
(particularly Grumpy and Doc) are alive and well and have moved from the
forest to the Internet ... Hopefully the LCC one won't be like that.
However he who pays the piper calls the tune, and if you would prefer a
forum then so be it. I can only say thanks for all the effort, input
and help you have given over the years.
