He he I'm one of those lurkers indeed !
I live right across the pond, and I've been in the UK on various
occasions and always enjoyed it.
Meeting new cruiserheads and doing a bit of offroading sounds good.
With my good friend Lio we are contemplating a drive through and some
fun in my tiny LJ70 (naturally aspirated).
The details have not been sorted out yet but I think we both are really
looking forward to having some more cruiser action and socialization.

Hi Denis,
Great to hear from you - just another 15 or so lurkers including the new
boys to say hello ;-)
Where are you? It is useful to include your location, model of TLC and
any mods in your sig.
Have you thought about joining Lio for a trip across to Salisbury Plain?
A friend has just moved down the Auvergne (spelling?) and was looking at
an LJ70 but very foolishly has opted for a much newer Suzuki - bit
mistake!

I'm right about in the middle of the North of France, about 60kms
inlands from the seas. I haven't found how to set up my sig lines
depending on the recipients yet, but here goes :
I own a couple TLCs : the NA, bare bones, 1985 LJ70, which is currently
my daily driver and company truck, it was fitted with an complete OME
2.5" lift kit and mud tires when I bought it last spring. Since then I
repaired the awfully rusted rear bodywork. Future plans include locking
diffs, a snorkel and a PTO winch.
The 1975 BJ40 was my first cruiser, it has 4" lift springs, mud tires
and a welded rear diff.
I also have a 1980 BJ40 wich has been under a never ending resto
operation for about 3 years and a half, and I just bought a 1979 FJ55
that needs some work...
The three other cruisers are parts rigs and are probably not worth
mentioning :-O
I have started my own company earlier this year, focusing on custom
(mainly TLC) parts and equipment, its a bit slow for now but I'm trying
to keep focus on the long term and not get frustrated. Anyway..
We are talking about the same and only Lio ;o))

Hi Dennis
Do you have a web site so some of us could look at what you have for the
cruisers.

Hi Denis,
Congratulations - thanks to John Byrne I have been reading the French
Toyota Landcruiser magazine and am impressed by some of the innovation
particularly on the custom parts for overlanding/rallye raid - it reminds
me a lot of the sort of things I used to do on Rally Cars in the early
80s.
The only down side about all the great kit you have over there is the
prices are high compared to sourcing from Aus/SA or getting stuff made
locally here in the UK.
Whilst I actually run a web business, I'm also doing more and more
servicing/repairs/preparation on TLCs on the side. At the moment it is
more for fun than anything else and subsidises my own TLC and 'workshop'
although with the severe shortage of any real TLC experience in the UK
even amongst the big 4x4 companies I am seriously considering trying to
build it up a bit more, particularly on stocking and supply overlanding
kit - all the other companies always take around 4-6weeks to order stuff
in.

Hello Denis,
Welcome aboard.
So you are in St-Sylvestre Cappel, aren't you?
Where do you get the stuff from? OZ, ZA or Japan?

No, but I'm close, about 15kms South-West :o))
Do you have some relatives, or spend some time there ?

John Byrne a ?crit :
My cruiser offering is still a work in progress, and my website is due
for an update !
Julian Voelcker a ?crit :
He he my brother took care of that, he laid out a shell and article
management system that we both designed, as well as the layout, I only
have to feed some stuff in !

Denis,
No relatives, just a hunch. I visited the are a many years ago.
Usually, after disembarking in Callais I head straight east. Next time
I'm in France - around 24th Dec. - I'll be not far from you, going
south to board a ferry in Sete.

Not everything you see in the mag are made in France ;o)
There's money to be done in buy and sell :o) I'm more of a hands-on
bloke myself, I'm trying to design and build my own products, I have an
engineering background but missed the practicing. Now I can think and
build, best of both worlds ! The drawback is that it takes an awful lot
of time to set things up, and a lot more than I thought anyway. For now
I'm concentrating on basic steel products but thinking about a ton of
other, more involved things :-O

Denis,
What type of development are you involved in?
And don't tell me you have a fully equipped workshop with a lathe,
milling machine, MIG and TIG, plasma cutter and other toys :)

Right now I'm in the middle of 80 series bumper systems, next comes 70
and 40 series rollcages. I'd like to focus more on mechanical parts but
I have to pay the bills fist ;o)
I don't have the room for a mill right now, and I'm still looking for
the right TIG for the right money. Last week I upgraded my MIG to a
260A, 200A @ 100% duty cycle beast, I don't think I will ever need a
bigger one :o)
Yes I have a couple toys, actually I may spend as much time building/
buying/ fixing tools and equipment as doing productive work. I think I
have gotten a tool addiction, and it's a good thing that I don't have a
lot of money !

Denis,
I think I understand the feeling- after all has been thought out,
planned, prepared and organised, the actual execution of the design is
a tedious, time consuming chore :)
Are you thinking about developing brackets for engine driven
auxilliaries, such as compressors, pumps, 2nd alternators?

Roman,
very true !
and you have to do it at least twice each time because the first
attempts execution is when you are find out what the issues are.
Why not :o)
The truck I'm currently working on, an intercooled 24V HDJ80, has
absolutely no room in the engine bay for anything additionnal, so these
will come later on when I can lay my hands on a 12V.
bye,
denis
