368,000 Km on 80 series diesel Landcruiser and suddenly started burning oil. Thought worst. Was ready for bad news but even though car serviced regularly the air filter had not been changed for long time? Changed air filter and problem disappeared. Almost no burnt oil. Start with simple options , it pays.

How come the air filter hadnt been changed, it's one of the easiest service items to do, especially on an 80.

I believe they are reusable, can be blown out with an air line if they are very dusty and you dont have the option to buy a new one.

Changing an air filter every service is just a waste of money here in damp UK but in drier climates i can easy imagine taking it out to bang some dust out of it almost weekly .

Agreed, but better to be able to clean it, and carry on if a new one is not available.

The beauty of K&N you just wash it out with petrol . They actually provide a service kit so you can re-oil the filter but i thin out some 2-stroke and use that instead .

That sounds overly complicated. The beauty of the original 80 and 100 series cyclone filter is that it's made for "blow, rinse and reuse, for life". Change every half a million miles, or thereabouts. In the mean time, just blow off loose dust with compressed air, then rinse in a bucket (agitate for 12 sec) and put it in again, wet, if you are driving right away. It's also one the best filters around for both flow and small particles filtration. Change only if it gets too rusty.
