Axle/Gearbox/Front Diff Breathers needed?

Hi guys,

I'm currently stuck on the finer details of my snorkel install.

If you've fitted a snorkel to a 1KZTE please look at my other thread - maybe you can help?

On top of adding a snorkel is it worth doing something with the axle, gearbox and front diff breathers.

If so, what needs to happen?

Extending them to a high point, often through simple fuel filters located in the engine bay seems to be the done thing. If they're at the top of the snork then you know water's not getting in.

Thanks StarCruiser - what do you mean through fuel filters? Has anyone got a tutorial they could send me with photos?

I'm a total newbie and could do with some photos of what the breathers look like. Are they easy enough to extend or do you need to tap certain spots?

hi KZJ,
the breathers are just flexible air hoses that are routed from the axle, gearbox and front diff to a high point somewhere under the bonnet. you put an inline plastic fuel filter at the end so no dirt can get into it.
just replace the standard breathers, they look like a small hose with a clip somewhere on top of the axle, gearbox and front diff.

Thanks a lot Firewout.

Are the existing axle, gearbox and diff breathers already individually routed, or have they been joined?

i.e. do I need to run individual extensions for the axle, gearbox and diff?

In theory could I connect the breathers to the airbox?

The breathers of my 80's rear axle just go 30 cms in the sleeve of a cable harness. They are individually routed. Don't think too much of it. It's just a piece of hose with a little flap at the end.
so yes, route them individually. Disconnect the existing breathers and put the new hose on.
in theory, you could route them to the airbox. But this is a bad idea because there is always negative pressure in the airbox and you don't want that in your gearbox/ differential/axle. You dont't want to pull the wheelbearing grease through the seal into the axle. Also when a breather gets disconnected at the axle and you do a river crossing, you pull water into the hose through the airbox into your engine...this would be very bad for the engine.
