BIG END BEARINGS

Hello all again.

I've just reached 300KM without the BeB's being done.

Noticed some "flaky" stuff in last oil change, but do not have any noises - yet.

So going to bite the bullet and get them done.

I notice from www.safari4x4.com.au that in Auz it's only 4 hours work.

My Mr Yaris mechanic could take a whole week on the job. I want to protect myself from the cost of Mr Paddy Yaris not having done this job before and billing me for a weeks work.

Any Irish based sub-scriber got the job done in a reasonable time frame? - if so would appreciate any contact details or recommended garages.

Thanks

Niall

Hey Niall
Mr Toyota should be able to do it.
At least thats what mine told me when I enquired about changing mine when the mileage requires it, just as a precaution mind you.
They said about 4 to 5 hours aswell.
I did not get any noises at all, just lack of power than immediate final engine failure.
I know there are cruisers out there that have no problem with their BEBs but mine did.
And as they say once biten twice shy or in my language its a hell of a lot cheaper to get them replaced before they go than after.
Some where in the 1000s cheaper.
That is one of the reasons I changed over to Amsoil and do the oil analisis. Hopfully to know in advance of any wear in the engine in time to repair it and also using better oil to help prevent it happening in the first place.
cheers

Hi John,
The actual work should take that long, however the chances are the
dealer will need the car for longer, the chances are the dealer won't
have stock of the correctly sized bearing shells and will need to order
them in, which could add a few days to the job.

Hi Julian
When the time comes I should be armed with the info needed and get the
Toyota dealer to order them in advance.
But sure that should be years away at my current mileage.
I can think of a lot of other things that can and will go wrong before that
time.
cheers

John,
Not very likely. You'll need first to know the numbers stamped inside
the engine on the bearing cap and on the crankshaft.

I think you should reckon on being without it for around 10 days. If you're
concerned about Mr Yaris, why not try and get a written quote for the work?
One of the reasons why they won't like a job like that is because it's very
rare for them. Therefore, their mechanics won't be up to speed on the 'book
times' for a job like that. They make far more money from routine servicing
than jobs like yours.

Thanks John, Julian, Roman & Neil for the feedback

Will let you know how I get on. Will be doing my damdest to get a written quote - but would say they'll be slow to give one.....

Hi Niall
Ok good point.
I hope its years away and it should be .
Would i be right in saying all they have to do is drop the oil pan and then
read the numbers stamped on the various parts.
If that was the case then all they need do is drop the pan, get the
numbers, give back the cruiser, order the parts and then leave the cruiser
in when the parts arrive and they have a slot.
Talk about money being made on rotine servicing.
I was talking to the postman today who ownes a Chevrolet somthing or other
and he was telling me he had to leave it in to the dealer to get a headlight
bulb fitted.
All because the front bumper has to be dropped or taken off to fit the bulb.
