Biodeisel & SVO

Wondering if any of you are running on Biodeisel or any sort of
Straight veggie oil mix?
Whilst I'm interested in running my HJ60 on it, I'm also interested
in the wider picture.

There are a few of us, what would you like to know?

Sorry, I have been a bit busy finishing something off to reply before
now.
I guess my questions are grouped into:
- Will my 1989 HJ60 run SVO? I understand that when it's slightly
cool it may be necessary to install a small heater of some sort to
warm up the Oil and that fuel filters need changing quite quickly
after converting over.
- Can you mix and match different types of Oil if so - eg; Veggie oil
and then Rape seed oil in the same tank?
- If not SVO (my real interest) what mix with petro diesel is
considered safe?
- Any web sites that anyone can recommend (yes, have googled and
spent hours reading up ;-)
Any guesses to what my next trip/film might be about ;-)
Cheers, Darrin

Hi,
It depends on what mix you are running - with a 50% mix you should be OK.
Start running on about 10% SVO and then slowly increase the ratio as you
feel comfortable.
Shouldn't be a problem.
I know several that have settled for 50/50, but you could go higher. It
varies from vehicle to vehicle, best to just suck it and see.
Try some of these - I bookmarked them ages ago, but haven't had a chance
to check through the latest content.

Cheers,
What is the worst that can happen? Rubber seals go? Engine runs roughly?
Cheers, dj

Hi,
Certainly with BioDiesel there can be issues with the fuel filter blocking
up after the first couple of tanks as the pipes get cleaned out and there
can be issues with older hoses rotting, but I'm not sure if these apply to
running SVO.
Best bet would be to checkout on the forums that I sent over the link to.
Failing that I am signed up to a couple of Yahoo mailing lists on the
subject where you should be able to get some good support, although I
don't check the messages that often so can't help that much - I collect
the messages and use as a knowledgebase occasionally.

Safest to start out assuming that the worst that can happen is an
expensive engine rebuild ... Then work out how much you're prepared to
risk :)
More often than not I mix my SVO with unleaded Petrol (85% SVO, 15%
Petrol) and fill up with that so that after a while there must only be a
trace of pump diesel.
At 50% SVO, 50% pump diesel it sometimes runs on a bit when you switch
off if the engine hasn't warmed up. I assume that means 50% is actually
a bit too thick and perhaps 35-40% is a safer bet.
If it was high enough up my priority list I'd do a three tank conversion
using the space where the spare wheel goes with a small tank for pump
diesel, for starting, and a big one as an aux SVO tank for increased
range. Then I could ditch the petrol.
Best regards,
Jon.

Can I stick an oar in and ask why anyone bothers to use SVO or Biodiesel?
If you use SVO and pay the duty then it's no cheaper than pump diesel and
you risk (maybe a small risk but still a risk) wrecking your engine.
Biodiesel is not much cheaper either and there's the hassle of collecting /
storing it.
I can only see an upside to SVO if you don't declare all the duty due which
is a bit too dodgy for me to feel comfortable with.
Just playing devils advocate.
Pete

You don't have to use expensive SVO Pete ;-) SVO + duty is still costing
me 20p or so per litre less than pump diesel (depends where you get your
diesel of course). Not as big a saving as before SVO prices went up
recently but worth having.
I also like being able to stock pile 'fuel' in my garage.

Exactly the reason I need to make a film about it Pete! ;-)
Something like,
- it would be hard for the US & UK to invade every country
(physically, not just economically) that grows plants
- less people may die
- it seems better for the environment (caveats times 100)
- it how's our engines were originally designed
- the more people start to use such things, the more pressure for the
car companies to start supporting it
- most countries could grow there own
Also see http://www.apple.com/trailers/sony/whokilledtheelectriccar/
Even if it was the same price I would want to use it for the above
reasons (and more)
Fair enough - it often provokes interesting discussion...

Ahh...
I was using 40p a litre as a guide price for "cheap" SVO + 47p duty. If you
can get SVO for 20 - 30p / litre then that's a different story.
Bloody cheek calling SVO non-bio fuel and hiking the duty by 20p / litre in
my book! What is SVO if non-bio???
Pete
