BJ73 VM 5 cylinder fuel lift pump

Hello all,

If there is anyone out there who knows a thing or two about the VM 5 cylinder engine, I would love to know which direction I should look to in order to find a part number for the mechanical diesel fuel lift pump for the VM 5 cyl engine (VM66A/HR 588 HTA) or an aftermarket replacement which would work. I want to keep the truck as original as possible but I haven't been able to find the same pump online to find a gasket for it. The pump is Italian (BCO from what I can tell).
After scrubbing the whole engine down to remove years of thick, caked on oil and dirt (from the previous owner) I found that although there are slow oil leaks from various gaskets and seals, the worst by far was from the fuel lift pump. It's close to the engine mount but luckily not close enough so the flow goes across the oil pan gasket and that's it.
If I can't find a part number or a replacement, could I use a gasket maker on it?

This is the the top of the pump, it seems to be branded BCO, but I'm not exactly sure.

Hi Mike.

If memory serves there is an oblong rubber o ring seal to rear of the lift pump. You could make a gasket out of card or use silicone mastic.

I have the part number somewhere for the 4 cylinder. I'd put money on it being the same. I also have the workshop manual for the 4 and 5 cylinder. I'll look through my posts cos I think its on the site somewhere.

part number is for the lift pump off 4 cylinder. its easily disassembled and cleaned by the way.

That's fantastic! Thanks outdoordan, it looks to be the exact same pump.

I like to have multiple contingency plans ready before I begin any job just in case something goes off the rails because I don't enjoy having to find an alternate plan from a frustrated perspective.

The pump itself seems fine, but the 33-year-old rubber ring is not. I'm itching to buy a brand new one because I also have a habit of replacing good, old parts that have small problems just to refurbish the old one and keep it for the future.

VM are not known for changing parts for the sake of it.....have you tried a VM specialist ? Jeep fitted VM engines as did a few agricultural machinery makers....most parts seem to be available for VM engines..... the rubber O ring could probably be replaced by any O ring of the correct diameter and section.... no need for a VM part

Hi Grimbo,
With the original part number I was able to find the same Italian pump which is still manufactured for a tractor.
I haven't found a VM specialist here in Spain yet, at least not in the north where I live.
