[Chat] Fuel gauge inaccuracies?

Does anyone else here find their fuel gauge very inaccurate,
particularly with their 80?
When my gauge is around the half way mark there is generally only about
a third of a tank left.
It's a long way from my old SAAB, which was as near as dammit 100%
accurate with the on board computer telling me how many miles left in
the tank based on consumption, etc, very handy.

Hi Julian,
Fuel gauges are they ever accurate? The one on my 80 lulls you into a
feeling of false security up to an indicated 1/2 full and then just when you
have done a mental calculation as to how many hundred miles can be covered
until the next brim full, it plunges rapidly making you look at every
filling station like the last chance saloon. Some time when I think that I
am nearly empty with a fuel can in reserve I might plot liters/gallons
against the needle!

Hi Guys
What I do is reset the miles counter every time at fill up which means
because I know how many miles I get to the litre then multiply it by the
litres and of course leaving a little extra for safety and this works for
me. I usually work it out at 6 x 80 which is 480 miles before I have to
refill each time and that leaves about 10 litres of a safety margin.
No w while I have you lot if you do run out of Diesel is it a simple case of
fill it up and away you go or is there more to it, stupid question really
because knowing it has to be more complcated than that.

Same here - 1/2 full mark typically after 270 - 340 miles (depending on the sort of use)
warning light at 440 - 520 (depending on ditto).
I think your Saab was exceptional: every car we've ever owned has exhibited these inaccuracies.

Hi John,
Yep, I always zero the trip but I must have a small Tank as I never can
achieve 480 miles, km perhaps, still got caught by the cops on A48 Duel
carriage way doing 80 in a 70,so maybe that's why. These camera vans are a
PA I have never been done by traffic cops at that speed they usually ignore
you unless going much faster. I was told by a Traffic cop once that they
will not bother with people at 80 or under as they like to keep the traffic
moving. The camera vans around here wait at the top of a hill just out of
view, so when you are stroking the throttle to maintain speed and if you not
quick enough to reduce pressure when cresting, you have had it,click, click.

Hi John,
That is very good consumption.
I am still struggling to get 300miles out of a tank full, although I
know I really need to get my injectors checked and possibly my valves
checked.

Hi anthony
I know what you mean about the sly ------- waiting to get you instead of
doing some thing better. Its all a money scam you know , its worth millions
to the tax man every year. Over here they have changed a lot of the signs
from mph to kph which is great fun, I find I am spending more time looking
at the speedo than what I should. Also here if you get a speeding ticket you
get points on your licence, two for speeding and if you go to court to fight
it and lose you get four points , after twelve you lose your licence and
have to resit your driving test, what a croc of ----. They also take the
soft targets to get such as the duel carrage ways here you are supposed to
do 40 mph, a double lane , good road and only to do 40. They wait in ambush
at a bridge or bend or some where where its hard to see them sneeky sneeky.
I have seen 8 police under a bridge at a bend on a duel carrageway just
after where it goes from 50 to 40 mph and they were catching loads of poor
motorists. Imagine 8 guys catching motorists on a duel carrage way and just
down the road from a really bad area where im sure they could have done more
good patroling this area and helping people feel save.I have found that I
can travel nicely behind a car with out getting a ticket because of the
height difference I can see futher and he is in front so he gets it, unless
its a camera then I get it, but has worked so far. I can see a time when we
will all have a radar detector, it is ecpensive but could save you money in
the long run.

I agree it has nothing to do with safety at all, but is just another form of
TAX except you get points on your license as well. I think the public would
have more sympathy if they covered accident black spots or built up places
and schools etc. I am finding that more and more professional people are
becoming resentful of this police obsession and are seeing them simply as
the enemy. Around here they contribute nothing to road safety at all, they
ignore most other dangers and poor driving half of them have very poor
driving and observation skills and can often be seen committing all sort of
driving sins.

Julian,
The 80 fuel guage has a reputation for being innaccurate this
way. I have read about this on the 80scool list before. What is also
inaccurate is the empty mark. I have run mine down so that the needle
is clear of the mark (once on purpose) several times and have never
put in more than 80 Litres.
Regards, Clive.

Hi John,
Yup, bleeding me dry at the moment.
From filling it up to the brim to the light being on full time (around
80 litres) I am averaging around 290-300 miles on average driving.
I need some spare time and workshop space/good weather so I can take it
off the road for a few days to do the injectors and valves.
My gut feeling is that I have at least one leaky injector and the
valves need doing. I am just hoping that it isn't something more
serious with the pump.

Hi Julian sorry to hear that but at least you have the know how to fix it I
think. At that rate you may as well drive a large truck and have all that
extra room.

Hi Clive,
The best I have managed to push it to is 85litres - a bit nerve
wracking at the time because we were in the Scottish highlands where
fuel stations were few and far between.

I get 350 - 450 per tank depending on driving. But I have no idea how
much is left. If I get as far as the light coming on I run for a service
station. Generally when it's on the botome mark I look to fill up.

I have spoken to policemen that don't like it either but they get sent
out there by their superiors. I suspect there's some government target
behind it all. I recently got done by a camera. The offending item was
placed about 100 yards after a drop from 40 - 30 mph. At night where
there is a plethora of signs to confuse the eye and lots of lights. I
missed the 30 sign and thought it was still 40. Nothing had particularly
changed on the road to indicate a drop in speed might be required.

From what I recall there are specific guidelines about the positioning
of a speed camera relating to number of accidents, % drivers usually
speeding along that section of road, etc.
If you ever get flashed, the first thing you need to do is to ask for
the 'certificate' identifying if the camera fits into the guidelines,
if not you can get away with it.
This only applies to fixed cameras.
There was an article about it in the driving/motoring section of either
the Saturday Telegraph or the Sunday Times.

Julian,
I was done by one of those long range Camera Vans that are often seen
stuffed on the kerb or in a drive way. I do not know about certificates for
them. The Local BBC News revealed yesterday that Wales has the highest
density of speed cameras in the UK even higher than London.

Hello all,
Sorry guys but that's not that easy. If you want to learn something
about how the public can fight back, try this website:

Trouble is, the system is now so deeply entrenched and so grossly
overfunded that it is ever more difficult to prove the police wrong.
All simple legal tricks seem to have been tried and failed. BTW,
police guideliness are not enforceable before courts.

Anthony,
Here are some facts:
- According to police statisctis, in the five months between April and
August 2003, North Wales Police caught 32,333 drivers exceeding a
speed limit (that's equivalent to over 10% of all the drivers who
live in North Wales!) Right! 32,333 down =E2=80=94 271,960 to go!
At the same time:
- In the past year, violent crime rose 36% in North Wales.
- Detection rates for violent offences fell from 82% to 64%.
- In April 2003, just 18 out of 296 burglaries in North Wales were
cleared up (6.1%) and the lowest rate ever recorded.
- Only 41 of 693 vehicle crimes were solved.
- North Wales Police kept =C5=811.7 million of the =C5=812.6 million raised from
speeding fines in 2002.
Now, anyone knows the date of the next elections?
