Only under enthusiastic uphill acceleration in 2nd gear . Any ideas ?

It's not a new problem Rich and i might not see it again for a few months so i'm curious rather than concerned . I can't imagine where to start looking for a fault unless i leave it to develop into something more .

Be nice to nip it in the bud though so i'm hoping someone has experienced a similar issue .

Probably worth hooking up to a engine code reader, should tell you the area to look.

Short the pins on the diagnostic port and count the flashes for the error code.

A job for you Ed if i ever get there to have the winch fitted .

I'm on the road to Romania Thursday morning Tony so there's no time to be finding faults now .

I do have a diagnostic port though , can anyone suggest a reader for it ?

Yes i've read about the trick numerous times Rich and just as many saying the code arrived at sent them on a wild goose chase and non the wiser .

That's normal with electronics and diagnostics. It means you buy loads of bits you didn't need and spend days* chasing the fault. *With yours being an intermittent fault, substitute the word 'months' or 'years' here.

I've had the bastard Smart car over 3 years now and although the intermittent fault has now turned into a permanent fault, I cannot find it. I have now, officially, given up. It has broken me. And it's a bloody electrical fault.

My thoughts are that the engine is under maximum strain, putting out maximum power. With your mods, perhaps this gives :-
1, higher than normal boost in the inlet manifold
2, blacker than normal exhaust

Perhaps you could try and turn your boost down a little and see if it makes a difference.

Could it be EGR valve issues post delete?
Does the exhaust have a sensor in it? Could this be getting/ have become fouled?

Maybe the link wire will help narrow it down, maybe it will complicate things.

The thing is, I would think with your mods, you're the best bloke to sort it as anyone else will likely want to put it back to a standard set up before proceeding.

i believe shayne there is no reader for that port as only toyota tech boys have that toy.
hope ur trip goes well and car will be fine after all its a toyota

incase u have not checked try gearbox oil or filter as can play havoc with dirty oil or filter.
dont shoot me just a sugestion

 I guess your right Rich and nobody in their right mind would put my truck back to its standard performance . My guess is it's electrical - a dodgy sensor or some such or maybe the fuel pick up needs a clean and the pump is straining to keep up . Consequence of enjoying the sound of wheelspin in 2nd gear i suppose :icon-redface:

There are two pins to short, and the engine light will flash multiple times indicating a number.

I had something similar to what you're describing at it was the engine boosting beyond it's 14psi limit. Would only happen under full throttle with a good load, or hill.

Could be Beau there are 3 particular local roads that produce the light and each start with a 90 degree right hand turn , roundabout , traffic light and a stop sign that offers a very clear view of the adjoining uphill fast road so toodle up see i'm clear and floor it . I will keep an eye on the boost gauge next time .

I guess i had an intake leak because removed and replaced intercooler last night and no lights despite my best effort this morning on one of the known corners .

Well done finding it Shayne. I said you were the kiddie for the job. :-)
