Compressor - is this any good ?

Do you have Aldi near you Shayne? I have had one of their compressors for ages. Great thing & keenly priced... They get them in from time to time [emoji41]

Truth is i was planning to paint my transit tipper with a 6" brush , its a work truck so who cares . But then i got to thinking i would be missing an opportunity to give proper spray painting a go . The LC will need a respray at some point in the future so .........

Goes without saying not having the right equipment to start with is bound to result in failure but the equipment is not likely to see much use so i'm looking at cheap options .

What do you reckon guys i've never used a compressor that didn't have a tow hitch so i've nothing to compare to . It's compact size appeals to me and i can't imagine it being used for anything other than sandblasting and painting . Is this good enough ?

That looks too small to me for paint spraying. Go for at least a 25ltr tank and a 2hp motor. A 50ltr would be even better. I bought a 'cheap' one from Makro years ago and it's still going strong.

Right well its starting to look like the paint brush wins as i don't want a single tool that never gets used taking up an entire corner of the shed .

Still would someone mind explaining to me how the specs translate in real world terms ? Is it the bigger the tank the more constant the delivery ? 8 bar seems to mean nothing as its average spec whether its a freebie tyre inflator given away by garages or a 100 litre £300-400 compressor ? the need for horse power surely relates to the size of the tank ?

it's the cfm (cubic feet/min) thats important. they don't quote that for the one you linked to but it looks way too small They quote ltrs per min but I don't know how that relates to cfm. Tank size is not as important as CFM as the tank will refill when you pause work, as you do but it needs to be big enough to have a decent amount of time outputting at max CFM

I can't remember off the top of my head what the recommendation is, I think 4.5 min

adds for shit compressors tend to avoid quoting the important bits!! It's like the compressors you see advertised for inflating tyres for 30quid that say they can inflate up to 100psi, fucking bollocks. what they don't tell you is it would take a week to get upto that, and not far off a week to inflate a full set of 4x4 tyres, if it doesn't burn out first!! A tyre compressor thats worth having will cost a good couple of hundred quid, at least. I've got an ARB one on my truck along with a small tank and that will inflate all 4 tyres from 10psi but up to road pressure as fast as a garage hose, but that setup cost a good 300 quid or so.

same goes for paint sprayers I'm afraid. My dads got a pretty good clarke one thats about three times the size of the one in the link and I can't paint with that!!

Cheers Moggy i guess i will forget about compressors and make do with a paint brush or rattle cans .

55ltr/min is less than 2cfm so way too small. You can get a 24ltr tank, 2hp compressor that will deliver almost 5cfm so you will be able to do some touch up spraying with it but most full size spray guns need around 7-9 cfm so you'd have to keep pausing to let the comp play catchup and replace the air in the tank. A bigger tank would (obviously) have more air in reserve and take longer to empty.

A tyre compressor thats worth having will cost a good couple of hundred quid, at least.

Depends what you want. I got a tyre inflation compressor that'll inflate a 275/70-16 tyre from almost flat to 38psi in 2-3 mins for under £30 and it's a decent quality, metal bodied pump, not one of those cheap 'disposable' plastic hobbies either. Most people don't need an onboard compressor with built in tank that can inflate 4 tyres from flat as quick as a garage hose so saying you have to spend £300 is rubbish.

Someone who knows better can correct me if I am wrong. To do a decent job on bodywork you really need 10cfm free air delivery and a 100l tank (50 might do if your cfm is high enough). There are lower cfm guns available (down to 5cfm) but I haven't been able to find much info on the results they give. It all depends on how good you want it to look. The problem you will have if the cfm isn't high enough for the gun and paint, is an inconsistent paint finish. Over here in oz most high cfm compressors are 3 phase... But there are a few high cfm single phase compressors around if you look. You also want some sort of filter and dryer setup.

Either way the choice is to buy a very expensive garage ornament that i might find a use for every few years or get one that's no better than a rattle can . As for tyre inflators i keep meaning to get the T-max one but it never seems important enough when i'm never far from a garage .

My brother bought me a 2.5hp 50l compressor for my birthday. Yesterday I used 4 different air tools with it. I wish I had bought one sooner :)

it's not rubbish!:eusa-naughty:
I'm saying don't believe the adds that tell you a 30 quid compressor will infalte to 100psi, because thats not whats important.

I also said a couple of hundred quid for a compressor worth having, not 300, thats the cost of my set up. I'm not denying you can get cheaper, just that IMHO and experience, they aren't worth having. They are unreliable and inadequate for reinflating four tyres, and will probably let you down just when you need them most! Just because it's not the same as your opinion doesn't mean it's rubbish!

As you say, it depends what you want it for, now try doing all four tyres in a row with your compressor, then try doing it in 40 degrees in a sand storm!! It was while doing this, when both my truckair compressors that worked fine in the UK when I tested them blowing up a single tyre, packed up within a minute of use that I decided I really needed a better air compressor! (I contemplated this while reinflating 8 tyres with a foot pump, in said sand storm at 40 degrees!!) You don't need onboard, but I needed it for the airlockers anyways so went for a bigger compressor and tank as that worked out more cost effective than getting a separate portable compressor and another one to operate the lockers (a cheap compressor will keep thermally cutting out if you try and do all four tyres).

If you don't have a reliable method of reinflating tyres it discourages you from deflating them when you need to, but, as you say, it depends what your going to use it for. I spent several years researching the options before deciding what to go for and all the options on my final list were going to be over £200, whether freestanding or onboard because in the environments I visit, a 30 quid halfords special aint going to cut it. I need it reliable and powerful enough to reinflate all four tyres quickly.

Slightly off topic, but for those looking for reliable tyre inflation, Viair are pretty good and some of the more competitively priced.

Even then one like this

http://www.mattsavage.com/acatalog/300P-Portable-Compressor-Kit-30033.html

will take over 10 minutes reinflating a full set of four 33 inch tyres from 15psi to 30psi, and thats not allowing for the duty cycle if it's overworked. That one is over £160 and for me is not really up to the job.

this is probably the smallest I would consider, partly for flow rate, but also run time.

The other aspect is, without an adequate flow rate, you may find it difficult to get a completely flat tyre to reseat on the bead
