diff issue

Hi Guys
I was changing the diff oils today just in case there was water in there
from the weekend.
When I drained the front diff 4 pieces of metal came out. They are all
crunched up, the biggest being about 1/2 inch long.
They were caught by the sump magnet so I hope they stayed there.
They are fairly thin metal pieces, about twice the thickness of a tin can.
I have heard no noises of any sort coming from the front end but I know the
pieces should not be there.
As I have never seen the inside of a diff I do not have a clue where these
pieces come from.
Would anyone have an idea what to do or what these pieces are.

Hi Guys
I will see if I can post a photo of the bits but not sure how, so it comes
up as a link.
I drove the cruiser today and did 120 miles at motorway speed without a
problem.
i did not hear any noise or feel any problems either.
After straining out the diff oil I found another 2 pieces so now its 6
pieces of metal all chewed up like they went through the cogs in the Diff.
The metal is not cast like in a CV or not thick enough to be a cog wheel or
part of something strong I think.
Its more like the metal in a tin can like beans pressed into some shape.

Thanks for that.
I did try a few guys and They can take it out and send it off to a garbox
specialist but at what cost I dont know.
I Did drive 120 miles yesterday at motorway speeds and all was well.
But in the back of my mind I know I think its only a matter of time.
One guy did say he thought the fragments were just the pre tension skim
(washer because the thickness is about 1mm and if so all I can expect is a
little sloppyness in the diff as time goes by.
I will change the diff oil again tomorrow to see what the story is.
But yea I am inclined to agree with you maybe I should get it seriously
looked at.

Hi Guys
Just a thought.
Can I disconnect the front drive shaft if the front diff does go and if so
will the cruiser drive or will it be a waste of time.
Has anyone turned their cruiser 80 into a rear wheel drive and if so what
are the pros and cons.

They are fairly substantial bits of metal, especially taken together as part
of a component. Don't panic though because if it isn't broke, and its not,
in that it doesn't make any funny noise or vibration, then don't fix it. It
might never break down or it might break tomorrow. Its a machine, so always
has the potential to fail. With a bit of luck though it will not fail for
many years yet.
If, however, there ever comes the day when there are obvious signs that
things are not as they should be [apart from those chunks], like noise and
vibration of many more chunks or filings in the oil, then it would be best
to investigate further. What I'm trying to say is, don't lose any sleep over
it.

Thanks for the reply, wish I had your optimism.
I am always listening now for the crunch/crack and then hope I hear it and
not dismiss it as another one of those funny noises one hears from the
cruisers every now and again.
