Hi Guys
Just a thought and I dont get them often so here goes. If you buy something in say Aus like parts for the cruiser is there duty or vat or both to pay on the items . Is there an exemption limit before you start paying .
Thanks

Hi John,
For the UK you have to add an import tax to all items you purchase and
then VAT on top of that. The amount of import tax varies according to
the particular item - I looked into importing things from the US and
there was 0% tax on a winch and then about 4.5% on a bumper so it
varies a bit.
Generally for larger boxes you have to declare what it is you are
buying/sending - if the seller can put on it that it is a gift you
might be exempt, but not 100% sure.
Ideally you need to find a friend coming back from Aus with space in a
suitcase - I know one list member here got a friend to bring a power
steering system back from Aus for his 40!
Another thing to note is that Slee Offroad can do the hub socket for
around $19 and with Brendan Lally just around the corner and Dermot
Allen occasionally flying back and forth you might be able to swing
something!

Speak to Customs and Excise (or their Eire equivalent) and ask the
question. I always find the VAT guys very helpful with any questions I have.
So far as I know anything imported to the UK is liable to import duty +
VAT. VAT is on everything but Duty is selctive. Technically any goods
shipped to the UK have to have the purchase price displayed on the
outside of the package (copy of the invoice or similar) but I guess a
lot depends on the size of the package; if it's an envelope they maybe
won't notice but if it's shoe box size or bigger then it probably will
be checked. The Duty collection and checking is done by Royal Mail on
behalf of Customs & Excise.
I've no idea how it works in Eire though!!
