What causes / doesn't cause the smoking - what's actually going on in
the engine?
Mine is standard but starts immediately with a little puff of smoke.
Ian.

engine?
In my opinion:
black smoke = to much unburned fuel
white (gray) smoke = air in fuel, bad injection timing
blue smoke = burnig oil
It is of course general solutions, smoking can couse many other things, like
dirty fuel filter, bad fuel, etc

Julian,
For black smoke, add also oil in the turbo and intercooler (if you have one)

It could be several things.
1. Oil leaking from the valve guides
2. Moisture in the exhaust pipe
3. Unburnt fuel from when you last turned off.
The first one may be cause for worry, the others not. A way to test it
is to see if you find the puff of smoke is more noticeable after
leaving it for longer periods - more oil leaks past the seals giving a
bigger puff of smoke. This can also be tied in to the engine oil
requiring topping up between servicing (and no obvious drips
underneath).
If this is the case and you notice it getting worse, then it might be
worth investigating further.
Pawel's colour code will also help with the diagnosis.

80less at the moment - Roll on June!

Thanks all.
Ah ok I'll stop trying to find mine then!
I just got mine from Do-It-All! Went in to buy some hose to drain the
filter and spotted them. Saved another trip to Halfords.
No worries I'm not bothered just wondered if I was missing something
obvious.
Now I have my cheap rubber strap things from the DIY shop I'll try them
first, if no joy I'll remove the whole lump. In fact if I can loosen the
filter first I'll probably remove the mount anyway as it'll make messing
with the sensor easier.

The theory is that of 2 wear out first I should replace them with ones
that match the remaining 2. Whereas if all 4 are finished together I can
choose a different type / size.
I thought you had to be careful how you switch them around or is that an
anachronism from cross ply days?

Sorry it sounded a bit curt when I look at it again! You know how it is
when you've just waded through a bog of emails for work replies tend to
become a little clipped.
Ian.

Ian,
Don't worry, no offence taken. I have managed to download fitting instructions so have a reasonable idea of how they look.
The fact that several of you have them is a good sign, although need to give some thought to the type of hook - I need traditional ball as well as NATO style hitch.
Roman, didn't you have some sort of combo hitch?
Cheers,
Julian

Yup. I've got it. Cost? - can't remember (80 quid or more). Got it from
Kingsley Cross Country in Bordon, Hampshire -
http://www.kingsleycrosscountry.com
It can be bought cheaper in the US, provided you can import it without paying
postal charges (rather heavy stuff)

Has anyone ever asked OME why they are different lengths?
Why do they smooth out the speed bumps so well are they just superior
dampers or are the springs rising rate as well?
Just being inquisitive!

I'm interested in this.
Does it apply to the 1HDT as well. I've been driving round thinking this
thing needs another gear in the auto box. It has a big hole between 3 &
4 where it drops into this torque hole.
Also my fuel consumption has just worsened but I notice no difference in
performance or any other driving factor. Any ideas? I know it's getting
colder but this changed suddenly not a steady decline and it's
significant - about 50 miles less on a tank. Oh and there isn't a pool
of diesel under the car in the morning nor any leak when the engine is
running.
Thanks,
Ian.

We're already taxed more by using more fuel!
I would reluctantly accept a penalty if it was fair. I.e. penalise by
weight or footprint. Then it can include all those big Mercs and
Bentleys that guzzle gas and take up as much room. But to penalise for
having more than 2 wheels driven is about as stupid as you can get.
What's it all about? It's about compensating for the fact that the
government and council can't provide enough schools and keep the streets
safe. Because if they did mothers wouldn't want to take the kids to
school in an armoured vehicle.
I hate those things - why can't we have more waking policemen patrolling
then they can nick people for other crimes as well.
And we want more without tarmac here!

"I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds that when driving through a
deep puddle I get a wall of water over the front, and (briefly) cannot
see where I'm going.
This rather came to a head last week when driving at night in torrential
rain on country roads in Yorkshire, when I darned near walloped an
oncoming car because I couldn't see where to steer.
I suppose it's due to wide tyres and a high front clearance, but has
anyone ever come up with a mod to stop this happening? Perhaps some sort
of "leading" mud flaps?"

The frustrating thing was that ordinary cars were having no trouble in those conditions at much higher speeds, as they just threw the water out sideways.

I know what you mean, but hadn't really thought about it being different
to ordinary cars until now. Maybe it's because of the bigger tyre
footprint displacing much more water?
Will have to try and remember to look more carefully at what's happening
next time I go through some puddles!

Gents,
I'd thought I'd poll you all on the rights of way issue in the UK. First
a little background. I don't use my Bruiser off road much. I bought it
to tow my motorcycle which I both race and trail ride on byways so I am
quite active on byways and RUPPs etc. One by one the government and
councils are closing them down. Nearly always specious reasons are given
that do not stand logical scrutiny. Behind it is the belief of the
authorities and general public that the only place vehicles should be is
on tarmac. The authorities encourage the public to believe this by the
appalling lack of clarity on signing and information.
Anyway hearing of yet another unnecessary byway closure I'm sick of it.
The reasons given were spoiling pedestrian and equestrian peace and
enjoyment. Well I cycle and cars spoil my enjoyment but as I'm on a road
I have to put up with it. In fact when I drive the other motorists are
spoiling my enjoyment but I have never seen that as a reason to expect
them to be banned!
Anyway how do you guys feel in the 4x4 world?
We are thinking of 2 things a possible demo in London next year before
the election and if Labour and Alun Michael who is driving much of this
is re-elected a possible days of civil disobedience when we will ride
footpaths etc. Ok impossible in a 4x4 and harder to avoid plod if he
turns up in a big vehicle. We really feel with only a rapidly
diminishing 5% of trails open to vehicles it's out of order to be trying
to ban us. The Ramblers have 95% vehicle free and the right to roam for
crying out loud.
So what are the feelings in the 4x4 world?
Regards,
Ian.
