Hello,
Next year i have a plan for our family holiday in June, I will be driving over to lido de jesolo in Italy, over about three days stopping off at various places, then having a weeks holiday at union lido that looks very well catered for the kids as well as having a look around Venice etc then driving back.

So has anybody been here, and any pointers for routes etc, places to avoid. I want to drive over the alps as ive always wanted to do this. my thoughts are to drive as far as i can on the first day but stop before i get to Switzerland as i think it will be expensive to stay there but i may be wrong.

So any one of you well traveled folk have any pointers.

thanks.

Joe

I rode over the St.Gottard pass on a bike a few years ago - VERY scenic road. When I stopped at the top, I was watching a biplane do aerobatics below me :)

Hi,

I did that very route this time last year.
We didn't do a direct route though.
We stayed is a great inexpensive camp site at lido de jesolo.

Our route,
Dover -----> Dunkirk vis DFDS.
Dunkirk -----> Strasbourg via Belgium and Luxemburg for the cheap fuel and no French tolls.
Strasbourg -----> Friedrichshafen (Lake Constance Germany)
Into Austria over Fern pass to Innsbruck
Out of Austria over Brenner pass to Venice

At Friedrichshafen we stayed at Campingplatz, Fischbach.
At Innsbruck we stayed at Natterer See
At Lido de jesolo we stayed at Campeggio Don Bosco, 5 minute walk to the beach.

Gra.

Hi Joe,

Are you going camping with tents, or pulling a caravan, or what will you be doing?
Whats the attraction for you to Lido de Jesolo?
To be honest, I didn't think the beaches there were that good, they were ok, but nothing to write home about.

We continued after Jesolo to Ancona then onto Pescara.
Then a long haul over the Appenines to Naples,
we deviated from our plan there, as we were originally heading for Sicily for 10 days.
However we turned north then onto Rome
Then to Pisa
Then a whole host of camp sites on the French south coast
Nice, Antibes, Sites, Adge, Perpignan, just the ones I can remember now, on our way south to Spain.
On through Barcelona to our (didn't know at first) destination.
Ended at Vilanova i la Gultru, a place called Raco del Mar.

Great place for the kids, 2 beaches about 8 minute walk, the camp site beach was just down a short grassy lane, say a few minutes.
Also a naked beach just 10 minutes walk the other way.
Pretty well used as well

Going back was A75 via Millau all the way, toll free.

Hi Graham
a few friends etc have been and have said its a nice place, i have never been to Italy and wanted to drive over the alps so thought why not kill two birds with one stone. We will be staying in some B and B's (got to look into this yet) on the way and the site we have found in Jesolo has static caravans, eight swimming pools its own private beach etc etc so no need to tow the caravan.

i looked at the ferry crossings as i was going to calais but going to dunkirk is cheaper so you have saved me money already

If you're going to be anywhere near it have a go at this road, it's somewhere I would like to drive. The Stelvio Pass

I've done it on a BMW Motorcycle 8-) . Not sure I'd want to try it in a Landcruiser though  .

looking at the video looks like it'll be hard work in an 80,specially the sharp corners probably end up doing 2,3or even 4 point turns on some of them i guess.

How the plans coming on? I wont be too far behind you as we plan to go to Lake Garda or that area for a week and then off to france for a week on the return.

Yeah all good, we have booked all the hotels to and from and our week in Jesolo. I have been doing all the little jobs so just a service up before i go and that's it. seven weeks tomorrow.
are you taking your 100 series across?

Yep thats the plan. My parents are flying into Rome for a 2 week charter holiday and we are then picking them up and spending 2 weeks on the road on our way back to the UK. Not sure yet on where we will be staying in Italy but starting to get some plans together.
