exhaust

Simon,
Have the exhaust pipe made shorter than standard- terminated in front
of the rear wheel. You lose one small silencer which frankly does very
little. More importantly, the flat bend in the pipe over the rear
crossmember is avoided. That will improve performance and save labour
cost.

100hp or whatever will just go for what will fit under the car as all I wanted was a new exhaust that would allow the engine to run a bit easier and outlast the last lot..... He showed me the 3" stainless and without sounding crass it is a very large pipe! While the car was on the ramp I had a look underneath and oh dear do I need a new exhaust. Broken cheese grater is one way to describe the number of holes in it!
unsure if he could get it over and under without squashing it!! Painful.
ng on???

Hi Simon,
We have the space and they taste deliscious so why not.
They are used to it with the children.

Simon, just a thought.
The Bristol branch of Longlife took quite a few photos of my exhaust as they had not previously done an 80 series L/C.
Why not ask the Battersea branch to contact them and get the photos sent up. It proves a full 3 inch system fits with no "squashing".
=A3800 wow. The Bristol branch subsequently said they had undercharged me at =A3500 but they honoured the quote. They said if they had to do the job again it would be =A3600.
Gareth - unsquashed.

Hi Gareth
Spoke to Ian at the Bristol branch where he is the manager and he can't
remember the job! The 800 is from the turbo to the tailpipe so based on
what other firms are quoting I think it is not that bad a price. Also
did not think it would save any cost despite being substantially less
complicated and less metal needed.
Roman, He thinks it may be an issue terminating the exhaust before the
rear axle as fumes could enter the car when sitting in traffic? That
makes some sense to me but maybe if it was pointed down and slightly to
the rear middle of the car this might work?? Or maybe leave the route
as original so I can admire the varying colors of smoke that pours out
the car when I floor it!!!
Talking of flooring it drove the old birds Saab 1.8t petrol and blasted
it away from the lights last night only to see a great cloud of smoke
left behind the car. Whoops! Still seemed ok though and runs better now
so I think the wife's driving it too slow.
All the best

Have you done this on your car? If so do you get a black rear wheel?
I've been considering this route but I'm not sure about the consequences of
directing hot exhaust gases and soot into the path of the rear tyre...

Hi Tony,
works fine point it out at 90 degrees to the side of the car and the
wind as you are driving forward whips it away, if you angle it back then
it seems to curl round and make a nuisance of itself. In NZ it is
illegal to do that it must exit behind the rear wheel except in some odd
circmstances that I can't remember.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hello guys,
The pipe outlet is pointed sideways, ending just in front of the
wheelarch. There's no soot or other stuff blowing at the tyre. I've
seen it on a number of French and Spanish LC80's, so I don't think
it's a regulations issue in the EU. I haven't done it yet but I will
at the nearest opportunity when my exhaust needs replacing.
Having said that, the nearest opportunity may have to wait because I
had the complete exhaust replaced 1.5 years ago (not SS) for an
equivalent of =A3120. I think it could be something like =A3200 if I asked
for SS. It was explained in my earlier posts.

Hi Jeremy,
The other thing is that you can get a build up of oil in the
intercooler that can get shifted when you thrash it.
I'm a firm believer of regularly thrashing cars just to avoid such
issues - they always benefit from it ;-)

Like your approach to cars Julian, you must have been to the same hard
thrashing school of driving as me.
Quick update on exhausts.
Going to sell my Standard Life shares and go for the Longlife option.
Cannot find anyone else that will do the job for the number quoted and
maybe they will feel guilty for wasting my time on Tuesday and give me a
deal???
All the best
