FJ40 Detachable Hardtop

Hi everyone,

I’m in the market for a FJ40, I love the look of the convertible/soft top , but also want the option to attach a hardtop for security and when it’s cold and rainy.
Ideally I want a detachable hardtop so I have the best of both worlds. Is this something which I need to get custom made or do some hardtop FJ40’s have the option to detach the roof?

I’m new to the world of FJ40’s so I apologise if this is a stupid question!!

The hardtop is detachable on the FJ40 but after 1974 (from memory so could be wrong) most came with barn doors on the rear which means you'll need to fit a tail gate when the soft top is on. Prior to '74 they had a lift up hatch and split tailgate. Original soft tops and frames are quite expensive but there are also good quality after market options.
The hardtops are quite heavy so a system as shown in your photo would be preferable.
Have a look at www;sor.com and www;ccot.com (Spectre OR and Cool Cruisers of Texas) to get an idea of prices but as you are in Australia you have several 40 specialist shops although I appreciate that they may not be 'just around the corner'!
