When I went to the Toyota Museum in Japan (one and only Toyota thing my wife
allowed me to do) there were some nice information boards showing how
Toyoda bought a licence from Chevrolet for a car and engine design, his
company at the time made machines for the textile industry, and the car
plant went on from that. I suppose he must have bought more designs because
the car engine, although straight 6 cylinder and about 3 litres was
different in the spacing of the cylinders and bearings, supposedly the Chevy
225 I-6 "Cast Iron Wonder" is the template for the F and 2F engines, and
similar enough that the distributor and possibly the fuel pump from the
Chevy fit the F=92s.

F engine must have come out in the 1950=92s the 2F engine version came out in
1975 and is the 4.2 rather than 3.8, different bore and head design but
otherwise not much different, production of the engine seems to have
continued until around 1987 although some might have been made later as the
engine was also used in forklifts.

Finance for the licence came from selling a loom design in the UK on the way
to the US =96 good thing he didn=92t just stay in the UK and buy a car design
from say Rover!

Reminds me of my first 4x4, a 1967 FJ45LV. But she only had a 3 speed
trans. The petrol engine is a copy of a Chevrolet. It's quite thirsty but
very solid.
