Fog Lights

Hi Folks,
I have a 2003 KDJ120 that in a few months comes up to its 1st. MOT,
it has an ARB Deluxe Winch Bar fitted and the bumper has provision
for Fog Light, but none are fitted.
I have also just bought a Rear Steel bumper with twin wheel carriers.
However the bumper is supplied without provision for fog lights, and
I will try not to make any cut-outs for such lights in fear of weakening
the bumper which must maintain its strength for High Lift Jacking and
other hard work.
Does anyone know the regulations regarding Fog Lights?
1. Must you by law have both Front and rear Fog Lights on cars
younger that a preset year?
2. Is it legal to have tail Light and Fog Lights in the same unit e.g. one
could use a switch that changed the intensity between Fog and
Normal use?
Regards Jorgen (Herts UK)

Hi Jorgen,
As far as I know, all UK cars must have rear facing fog lights, the front
ones are optional.
You need to be able to have independant brake and fog lights.
If done properly, cutting into the bumper to fit in fog lights should affect
the strengh too much, most of them are over engineered from a lifting point
of view.
A cheaper option is to get a fog light that bolts either below or on top of
(probably best) the bumper - see: http://tinyurl.com/cf55e.

There are positioning laws for rear fog lights. They must not be
within 100mm of a brake light. You only need one but if one is fitted
it must be on the drivers side. If two are fitted they must be
'paired'. The bottom has to be more than 250mm from the ground, the
top has to be lower than 1000mm from the ground. There is also a
distance from the side of the vehicle but I forget it, 400mm I think.
They have to be switched independantly of brake lights and I think the
switch has to illuminate when they are on. It is illegal to use fog
lights, front or rear, unless visibility is severely reduced, this is
translated as meaning visibility of less than 100Meters.
You do not need front fog lights. I have no rear fog lights on my
cruiser, this is not an MOT inspection item. It is illegal however and
the police will give you a ticket if they catch you.
You may have guessed that I've just fitted a set to a truck that I have.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Reno,
With dual wheel carriers I doubt they will be seen there.

Hi Guys
Interesting to hear that you must have a fog light on the drivers side rear
of the cruiser in the UK. So whats the story then with all the cruisers that
have a rear wheel carrier on the drivers side if they are stopped by the
police.

Hi John/Jorgen,
If the tyre is blocking the fog light you should re-locate it - hence the
original question ;-)
Actually that reminds me - Jorgen, you can install the fog light onto the
swing out arm - check the manufacturer's site they will probably have an
option for fitting a fog light or reversing light there.
