Front Diff breather and Milner offroad

Hi all
On another subject. Whilst checking fluids yesterday morning I noticed that
there is a lot of sticky oil coming out of the breather to the front diff.
I have changed the oil and found it rather bad and grungy so I know I have
to sort out the seals soon but why should the diff be throwing oil out the
breather?? Oil level is just over the mark as I filled it on a hill but it
will be only just over.
Does anyone know where Milner source their parts as I am worried about the
quality of the Starter motor for ?175.00? I will call Toyota at lunchtime
and find out what it costs for the real thing!!! I bet it will not be ?175.

Hi Simon,
The front breathers quite commonly get oily especially if you are doing
longish runs. As long as the breather is working and the little ball in the
end of it is doing it's job you should be OK.
It only gets worrying if you start to get grease from the birfields in the oil
- then you are looking at a front axle rebuild.
As far as I know most of the parts are sourced from Japan and are not genuine
Toyota ones. They have a good reputation and do a lot of Toyota off road
racer preparations so I doubt that they will sell any old crap.

Hi Julian
So I need a Front Axle rebuild! Great what next....?
This is the list so far:
Front Axle rebuild new seals and repack birs n bearings
New Starter
New Exhaust
Rust spots (not too serious yet) all over the underneath of car so really
need to do something about it before next winter.
Aerial not going up and down like it should (local kids think its funny to
bend them over if left up)
Should look at main bearings as the car is quite old now
New Shocks and springs as she really is getting floppy in her old age
Radiator fixed but on the cheap so this will go wrong again
Time for a full service and a new timing belt
Etc

I did both sides of our 93 on Saturday, it's not too bad if you take
your time and have a LOT of paper towels to hand to wipe all the grease
up with. The service kits that Milner sell (labeled as 'both sides') are
good value, they include all the gaskets and the inner axle oil seal as
well as the more obvious swivel seals.
I was reluctant to interfere with my big ends on the basis that if they
were ok then having took them apart to make sure I'd increased the
chances of something going wrong! I have used the Difflock oil analysis
service instead to check up on them, much less invasive.
Best regards,
Jon.

Hi Jon
Both sides in one day? That's going for it. I will look into getting the
service kit and plan a weekend's grease monkeying.
I agree about the main bearing its just I keep reading all these horror
stories about engines going bang....
All the best

Hi Simon,
It's the big ends not the mains that you need to worry about, big ends can
be changed on the vehicle whereas the mains require crankshaft removal so
need the engine out. The bearings are a similar design but the big ends see
much higher loadings. Regular oil analysis is a great idea but won't tell
you the condition of the bearings right now, whereas checking and/or
changing the bearings will give you complete peace of mind...
If you do rebuild the front axle, use Milner's kit for everything except the
inner axle seal - use only the genuine Toyota part for this as it's a
different design that has much better flexibility or 'float' and will save
you having to do the same job twice. Its quite possible to do both sides in
one day if you're confident on the spanners and have the factory service
manual.
All the best,
Toby

Hi Toby
Will leave inside engine probs for another weekend but thanks for the
advice.
First job this week will be to get the starter motor off and the new one on.
Mine is still spinning so I am guessing that the wires are ok and will try
simply changing one for the other. Will report back later. I notice from a
search on 80scool/birfield.com that my starter motor woes are not that
uncommon and potentially I could have had a very, very expensive disaster
had I not managed to disconnect the batteries.
All the best.

Their part no 000198K is =A326.00. Put this kit on the 94 about 20k miles
ago no probs so far, and on the 93 on Saturday so early days.
A couple of times I've heard mention of the Milner inner axle oil seals
being no good but I have to say they've been fine for me on the 94 after
all those miles and they're a good fit on the axle...
If anyone thinking of doing this has looked at the FSM don't worry about
the bit with an SST to get the knuckle off its bearings, it just lifts
off. Nearest you get to needing an SST is finding a 54mm socket!
Best Regards,
Jon.

Hi Jon,
My (fairly limited) experience so far has been that the Milner inner axle
seal is perfectly fine if your axle is very accurately aligned in the middle
of the hole. If there is any slight mis-alignment or whipping, maybe because
of shims to adjust the preload on the swivel bearings or a slightly
distorted casing or worn cv/driveplate splines, then the extra flexibility
of the Toyota seal works better.
Hope your '93 works out as well as the '94; these years may be less
problematic in this respect as the driveplate/cv splines were extended -
possibly locating the axle a bit better.
All the best,
Toby

Hi Pete,
SST - Special Service Tool AFAIK but quite a few mentioned in the FSM
seem to be not needed!
My FSM came from Milner, does anyone know if you can still get them or
are they officially out of print now? I know last time a friend tried to
get one from Milner they didn't have them.
I'm still slowly scanning away, done about 250 pages so far, guess
there's maybe another 1000 or so to go and then I can start on the next
one ...
Does anyone have a list of what is and is not available at the moment?
Best Regards,
Jon.

Where did you get the FSM Jon? Main Dealer?
Any news on the ITX - my need is now a bit more urgent.
Thanks Jon

Been looking for a FSM for ages and cannot find one. Which explains why I'm
so keen to get a copy if at all possible of yours. I keep a lookout in
various places but cannot find one.

Hi Jeremy,
I'm just trying to be conscientious about copying Mr Toyotas hard work
;-) It's still illegal but if nobody is selling them then at least I
won't be cheating anyone out of anything really.
Best regards,
Jon.

Every time I've asked Mr Toyota about them (ie in dealers etc) they have
treated my request with such derision I've stopped feeling bad. All we are
trying to do is look after our cars in the prescribed way, and I'm certainly
prepared to part with money if I find one of the FSMs.
Anyway, I'll keep in touch.

It's not necessary to remove the steering knuckle to re-place the inner axle
seal or re-pack a Birf.
