Front pulley

Hi All,
It's not strictly Landcruiser so apologies, but the front pulley on my 2.8 shogun has failed, surfing around some available are solid steel, some have rubber inserts as per standard. I know why the pulley has the rubber for damping etc anyone had experiences of the solid type? I don't want to cause more problems fitting this type.
Thanks David

Soon top be back on the road!!

Not direct experience but I have seen a crank that wore one of the main
bearings very differently after a solid pulley was fitted. On a 4 cylinder,
even a relatively low rev diesel I wouldn't risk it, shouldn't imagine a big
difference in cost, usually the reason to change is weight saving on the
crank for power gains - can't imagine you would gain much on that engine.

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for reply, I was wary of the solid pulley and your experience has
confirmed what I was thinking! I think the reason they market the solid
version is to increase the life of the pulley over the damper version, they
only seem to last about 50000miles, I remember from college days the reasons
for fitting the crank damper so will go for the standard item.
Thanks again.

Depends on the marketing! Some of the fleabay claims of 5hp additional
power from a light weight pulley are a little transparent. Plus a shiny
aluminium look to boot.
Surprised your not seeing better than 50K, for all their many faults our 4
pot diesel Nissans have shown no balancer problems with 100K and 150K.

David, just in case you don't know of it, have you tried the Pajero
Owners Club ?
(Pajero = Shogun = Montero)
Look at www.pocuk.com
You should find all you want to know there.
Alternatively, if you are a member then I apologise for giving you
useless information !

Hi Jon,
thanks for the reply, I have joined poc but so far have not worked out the
listing system, it's not as easy as ELCO!! and some of the postings seem a
bit unreliable.
Cheers

ten out of ten for spotting that.
im a long term pajero owner, had a 2.5, got it rebuilt, it died again so i
put in the 3litre v6 petrol, much better
my crank pulley did that whole separating trick too a couple of years back,
i couldnt find a replacement standard one till i was walking around a
breakers yard and got a solid one off a mitsubishi canter. not this shiny
aluminium ebay stuff, proper steel!
it solved the prob for me and never caused anymore grief. i did 250,000 kms
on it before i changed the engine cos of a dodgy rebuild.
my 2 cents worth
brian

I was wondering about that, I suppose the lower revving diesel engine might
avoid the harmonic resonances of the fast spinning petrols?
Probably also related to the engine balance, I know people have seen large
differences in conrods on the 2F 4.2 petrol in old Land Cruisers,
particularly if one conrod is a replacement from a later year! 2F is also a
long crank with few bearings so I think I will keep to the stock balancer,
despite it's low revving nature.
