Fuel filter on 1HDT

I went to change my fuel filter this weekend and couldn't find the drain
cock the manuals all seem to talk about. Is there one on mine - where is
it? If there isn't I assume it just means it will be messy?
I couldn't just try it anyway as my filter wrench was too big but will
buy a suitable one this week.
Thanks,
Ian.

If you mean the drain cock on the filter body itself, I don't believe all
models have them. I think it's used mainly for draining water as some models
have an incredibly loud warning buzzer that goes off and won't stop until
you do something about it.
I bought a couple of really cheap self gripping strap wrenches from B&Q a
while ago and I'm amazed at how well they remove filters - I only bought
them because they were cheap - the sort of thing you see on the aisle end to
trap impulse buying scrooges like me!
If you want a filter with a drain cock on it, your local Toyota dealer
should know what you're talking about and get one for you. All the non-turbo
4.0 engines I've seen have them, but I don't recall seeing them on the
regular UK spec cars.

BTW - When I was on holiday, someone wanted a copy of a 60 series manual,
but I've lost the email. If you're out there and you still need one, drop me
a line.

Hi Ian,
I know that you have an 80 series, but what year is it and also is it a
jap import? If you could post the VIN and Frame number I might be able to
find more info for you.

Hi all,
If you have to struggle to unscrew the filter on site, it's better to remove
the whole assembly (two bolts, two pipe clips, one or two electrical
connectors), and do it on the bench. That way you'll avoid damaging the
aluminium head and reduce spillage.

To echo what Roman says, thats exactly the way I change diesel filters.
I lightly clamp the new filter in my bench vice and fill it with diesel
before screwing the housing in place, that way you minimise air in the
system - no bleeding needed -
