fuel usage

Hi Guys
Just after reading Christophers milage report I have to ask.
What would cause poor mileage.

John,
Lots of things, a heavy foot, a badly setup engine or fuel pump,
a bad driving style, etc. etc.
I usually get about 23/5 from mine. On a recent trip to Hamburg I
had to lead a lorry that could only do 48 MPH. The fuel consumption
went up drastically, which I did not expect at that speed.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Guys
I was asking a while ago about the cause of using too much fuel after
hearing what Christopher gets in his cruiser.
I dont drive hard anything but that,
I dont tow, I dont have a heavy foot,
I dont excelerate away after stopping,
I dont caryy excess weight other than the few pounds put on over christmas,
the tyres are always at the correct pressure,
the windows are rearly down due to the cold and the usual not being able to
get them back up again,
Its realy well looked after service wise,
it gets millers fuel additive to help with the pump,
im getting crap mileage acording to the counter v the fuel used at 4 miles
to the litre.
I phoned a Diesel mechanic guy about getting the injectors serviced and
having him look at the pump aswell.
He said if its not smokey and giving problems with power leave it alone.
He said when the injectors need to be looked at it will tell you by the
smoke and bad running.
Its not smokey at all and runs very well so any ideas, it has no leaks
either.
It would cost 20 euro to service each injector and 50 euro each if the tips
needed replacing, how does that compare to the rest of you.
ANY IDEAS other than shut up for ------- sake john go get a life.
cheers

John,
My mpg figures are not impressive either - a full tank worth =A380 will
last for 250 - 300 miles.
So. I said to myself - allright, I can spend zillions for rest of my
landcruiser's life tinkering with pumps, injectors, miracle fuel
additives and other gizmos claimed to improve fuel efficiency by 50%,
etc, etc ....
Or I can keep it as it is, drive it only where and when it's needed
and save the money on a more efficient means of transport which will
get me from A to B without fuss. Being a true Londoner, I decided to
get myself a ...
... vespa.
Well, I'll take my coat ...

Remember I have the later 24 valve engine, a manual gearbox ... and no
suspension lift, winch, etc. Also (according to Julian) my suspension
is droopy, which probably helps with the aerodynamics!
Have you fitted larger tyres? And if you have, have you taken into
account that you are going further than the speedo says?

Hi christopher
Yep I know larger tyres, suspension lift, cold weather, 12 valve engine,
short trips, etc etc I seem to have them all, crap crap crap.
Maybe what I need to do for the next mod is to kit it out like a street boy
racers car, including body skirts, spoilers, big bore exhaust, lower
suspension to minus 8inches, low profile tyres, and of course the base ball
cap with the Toyota logo on it.
Im sure I could save fuel then just have to watch out for pot holes, speed
bumps, curbs, supermarket trollies, other cars that would now be the same
height as me, no load capasity, no going off road, feeling really silly of
course. Ah maybe ill think about something else other than what could be
wrong, I dont know what but there must be something.
I saw a set of wheels in the local motor factors the other day at 22 inchs
with low I mean low about one inch of rubber for a tyre and all for 2500
euro for the set. Geese has it come to that already boy racer 4x4s.

No, what you *really* need is a tortoise paint job down the sides.
Seriously, if you have bigger tyres have you taken that into account
when working out your MPG? If not you should find you are doing better
than you may think.
I was thinking the other day that I should try to get my hands on our
firm's CFD software and see if I can come up with any simple aerodynamic
improvements...

Hi all of you
It looks like only Christopher and me that have 'normal' fuel usage.
Could it be the engine itself(24valves) ?????

Very true - but the odometer really needs to be checked - got gps ?
Measured mile ?

Hi clive
Your dead right about the speedo. I also have the 285s and compared the
speed clock to my satnav and they are bang on with the 285s. So that begs
the question are the original mileage figures that you get with the smaller
tyres false like the speedo is.

Can I claim my place in the club Lubo? But I only have 12 valves, no
turbo and a manual box, plus a light right foot. Like you and the
rest who live on the continent, I use the normal fuel calculation and
normally fill-up in a range of 8.91 to 10.28 litres per 100km. I
constantly fill-up with +/-70 litres so these figures are a good
average for my varied driving conditions. These figures are mostly
with 'D2' or truck diesel with an additive, and occasionally 'Euro
diesel' whatever that may be, and the clock currently reads
260,890kms. I have been lower at consistent speeds travelling across
Europe in the low 8's and once even the high 7's. But in winter with
chains on a lot of the time as well as 4WD I can go to around
12litres and once even more when it was all short trips around the city only.
I now have a complete gearset from the HDJ fitted, so with higher
ratios in 1st and second I might even squeeze another 100th of a
kilometre from a litre if I am lucky!
As for JB's consumption, we advised him a while ago to find someone
with a GPS who could sit-in with him for a few miles to calibrate his
speedo. So you didn't find a suitable mate then JB? Hold on till I
come over to Ireland with mine.
Cheers

Good point, I've never checked my speedo or odometer against a GPS. I
must see if I can scrounge one and try. However judging by the speeds
at which I trip the speed warning signals dotted around here I think my
speedo is good to within 1 mph up to 50mph - however that's still a
possible 2% error.
The purpose of my original thread was to report on the effects (if any)
of adding acetone, so what matters is any relative change. At the
moment I rate it at somewhere between 0% and 4%.

Hey Jon C-W
Ah Jon as I have already said I have done the GPS to speedo trips and like
all of you guys I have found that (it) being the speedo is bang on with the
gps using the 285s speed wise, I dont know about distance, have to check
that out if the GPS does it..
I had to invest in a Satnav after the experiences in France last year. I
said never again will I be lost for hours on end and with dipped lights and
all the worry, so fixed all that stuff.
The funny thing is its nearly usless in Ireland.
Where I live is a town of say 15,000 people and its not on any of the GPS
maps at all.
Ireland is only covered to about 30% and thats all the big cities after that
you guess where to go with the GPS Wow isn't technology great, NOT.
Cheers Jon

John
Isn't the problem that much of Ireland still has paper maps based on a
late Victorian survey?
When I was last there I had an "interesting" time navigating round
County Cork using them, and finally came to the conclusion that I could
rely on the depiction of mountains, rivers, coastline and the
approximate position of towns that existed in 1890 - but not much else!
Certainly not roads.
We did use GPS ... in a boat. And it tied up very well with the marine
charts.

Hi Christopher
I got a right kick in the teeth when I bought the Satnav expecting all to be
covered at least where I would use it most. I enquired with Satnav and then
said its all to do with the maps that are supplied to them and it was all
the fault of OSI here. I got on to them and they say its all to do with
making money on the part of the makers of the GPS systems. It would seem
that Ireland is too small for them to make money because of a small
population and the fact we are not linked to Europe. I dont swallow some of
that at all cause the Uk is also an Island just with a few more people.
They also said that their maps are of no use to the GPS companies because
they dont have the required detail on them and are very difficult to
transfere to 3D and even more compicated to do that with voice guidance
aswell.
So it looks like ill have to be content to live in a town that does not
exist in GPS terms.

John
So to cut a long story short you are digitally and cartographically
disenfranchised.
In fact, if you don't exist you probably have a good reason not to pay
taxes .. perhaps "no taxation without substantiation" could be the
motto?
I think you should load the back of the LC up with tea, trundle down to
the OSI office, and chuck it (the tea, that is) into the harbour.
CB
Ps: I've just tracked your address down to within about 50 yards in
www.multimap.com so you DO exist after all. Pity - cancel the
tea-party.
