The string powered windscreen wipers takes me back. I used to drive a cab, the Nolan sisters pop group lived in Ilford at the time, and they had an account with us. I collected Coleen (now on loose women) from home to go to Euston station, the wiper linkage failed on the MK4 Cortina (such class) and of course it was raining, she found it quite novel pulling the string left and me pulling to the right.........ah those were the days.
