I'm going to have a poke around and a test drive on the '92 auto tomorrow
morning.
I've never driven an oil burner before so what should I be looking for and
how do I test for it? A checklist would be ever so useful.

Peter,
Here are some tips for diesel engines:
If possible, start it from cold and see if it starts easily, how badly
it smokes (grey, blue, black?)
See if it badly smokes (black) on rapid acceleration
Tappet noise at tickover
Engine running smoothly at tickover, steady pace, no judder, no
misses, no irregular noises
Oil /dirt collecting around the turbo

Hey Pete
Just to add to Romans advice.
Check the inside of the engine oil filler cap, see how dirty it is.
See how much smoke comes out that filler hole.
Dont be fooled by clean oil on the dip stick.
If the oil is dirty see if he would be willing to let you get the oil
aneylised.
Check for condition of the front swivel ball, see if they are rusty/lightly
wet or very wet.
With the auto test drive it to see how smothly it changes, it should change
really nicely without any shutter clangs or bangs.
Check all the gears on the auto selector are working.
Check the kick down on the accelator pedal see if works.
Ask for a discount to get the BEBs done.
