Subject: [ELCO] FW: BJ42 for sale on ebay
In case anyone is looking, found this on ebay. Item no. 220231845561
Auction is for hardtop only but seems to be selling a whole BJ42? Probably
expensive though.

It looks impressive, but is that really a 6354cc Perkins? More likely a
6-354, i.e. 354 cubic inches. Works well in my mate's Massey Ferguson
699 - definitely "stacks of low down torque" but the max revs at 2400
could be an issue.
Unless he's found 2:1 diffs...

True don't tend to worry about the cc (or cubic inches) for the Perkins
engines we use on generators. If it's a recent engine the 6 cyl 1000 series
is 365 cubic inches or as good as 6000cc, while the bottom of the 1300
series is 466.4 cubic inches or 7640cc, I imagine it's probably quite an old
engine though.
Suppose instead of 2:1 diffs you could use a reduction box backwards (or go
for huge wheels).
Notice the exhaust, think that was in a recent thread - seems at least one
MOT tester didn't mind a vertical stack.

Just noticed the reg is PUW662R, My 1976 45's is PUW580R and the one I had
to break up was PUR???R. ('75 is a P reg and imported by someone else)
Looks like all the 1976's were all imported at the same time by the same
person. If anyone has any information please let me know - would love to
know more background.

Not sure if the following will help, or just serve to muddy the waters.
I have a collection of old magazine roadtests which imply that both 45s
and 55s were officially imported at one time - the FJ45 test is from
Autocar in October '75 and the FJ55 from Motor in September.
The 55's registration is JUW 860N, which like the PUW plates is from
Central London, so I guess it's possible that they were all official
imports and registered at the same licencing office. The 45 in the
Autocar test is registered JYN 433N however, which although is still
from central London might give lie to the whole theory.
UR is a Luton code, and to confuse things further the Toyota
"concessionaire's" address in 1975 was in Croydon, not central London,
so I may be talking utter tripe.
FYI, list price for an FJ55 in 1975 was £4,178.07, and for an FJ45
pickup was £3,375.00, inc VAT.
HTH (which it probably won't)
