Ouch. Am I the only one that gets stuck regularly with my cruiser? I know
I'm not the best 4wd driver. When I get stuck though, it's mostly due to a
combination of high weight and bad approaching angles. I guess weight and
bad angles are one of the biggest downsides of big cruisers like ours.
Anyway, it'd be nice to hear some stories and see some pics of other being
stuck (I can host the pics if you want). At least I'd know I am not alone
;-)
I'll start: I managed to get bogged just this weekend, as you can see on the
pictures here: http://radiobaobab.be/index.php?id=3D166
Besides driving in way to slowly, I instantly sank in very deep and started
to slide towards deeper water. I could still move a little, but the idea of
submerging the cruiser was not appealing so I opted for a pull backwards to
get me out of trouble.
Now, don't be shy and share your most embarassing moments ;-)

Hi Frederik
What kind of tyres are you running, does it have diff locks and if so are they working.

Sorry, should have included that bit of detail:
- BFG Mud 255/85r16
- no lockers
Just before me a vw iltis drove trough that patch with no problems (fully
locked, and about 1.5tons lighter)
BTW, on the page I referred to earlier you can see in the last pic me being
stuck again, driving up a steep incline, my bumper hit the ground and lifted
the rear wheels. Not enough traction on the front wheels to get me trough.
Had to dig out the bumper and back out.

Hi Frederik
Just wondering is all , but I think the 80 would get through that with relative ease. Im no expert only had a few off road chances so Ill stop there and see what the others think before I make some silly comments.

I have only been stuck twice in the 80.
Once a couple of years ago in my old 80 trying to drive through a very
muddy gateway and then up a grass track fully locked with AT tyres. I
had to drive through the gateway at speed to get through it but didn't
have the momentup to get up the slippery grass on the track. After the
first couple of attempts the track was covered with greasey mud which
made it worse.
I think I could have done it first time, but lost momentum when the tow
bar dug into the stoney ground almost bringing me to a stop. I think
in time I could of done it, but had an impatient passenger so ended up
getting a tractor to tow us.
The second time was a couple of years ago on Salisbury plain in a track
usually frequented by 50+ tonne tanks. I was over confident going into
the mud pit and hadn't locked the axles and ground to a halt up to the
axles in mud. I locked the axles and managed very slowly to start to
reverse out (after a lot of wheel spinning and edging forward and
backwards digging myself a track).
When I was nearly out of it when some kind friends from the list here
suggested that I should drive on through to the other side now that I
had a bit of a run up - BIG mistake, only got about 10yrds further on
and ended up being beached on a hard bank in the mud so wheels were
just spinning in pools of mud.
A Simmex equipped LR came in behind me to try to tow me back, but
couldn't move me so ended up retiring to dryer ground and using their
winch!

You can see the photos of the second time I got stuck at

If you see the last phot, the observant of you will notice that it is
the same place that appears as the main photo in the Total Off Road
article!

Hi guys
I just did it that winter-could never believe before it happened but
believe after...
was on the way home and back had my TV from reparation(29''Sony-big
and heavy)The weather was not so cold-actually maybe the worst you
can have in the winter-around +1 degree. There was that football place
I use to drive sometime when it is ice so I can feel the car and the
joy. This time was a lot of snow(50-60-cm)I plunged into it and went
very far-maybe 15 meters before I begin to swing. And after a while
the car stuck with all four in the air:)
Don't get me wrong-I'm not disappointed from the LC-I'm disappointed
from myself -I went into adventure not prepared enough:
1. My tires are the worst you can have in the winter(all seasons
'Cooper' shit)
2.The snow was wet and slippery
3.Did it on first gear
4.Was on Hi drive
4.My swing was not smooth-then I lost the momentum...
the experts advised to go on low and 2nd gear...
When the car stuck with all three diff.spears I went out and look
under the tires-there was ice of course:-(
The tractor helped me anyway!!!
Shall I try it again?-YES
Shall I stuck again?-Yes Yes :))))))))))))))))))

getting stuck and slalom out.

Getting stuck is all of the fun.
Actually the first time I drove my 80 offroad I got stuck.
On a sandy bank, it was nicely balancing itself on top.
Lack of momentum.
So out came the little military shovel and half an hour later I backed off the little sandhill.
Driving my lj70 without lockers and such, I frequently ground to a halt.
Winches, hi-jacks, military shovels all part of the adventure.
I wouldn't underestimate those little military 4x4s though, light fast and fully locked.
They blast through some pretty akward mud.
If you're interested in motorsports, visit Ostend this weekend 02/04
The slalom enthousiasts are giving it their best. Small cars and a very winding track, light rain.
They'll be spinning their tyres and lifting the rear leg around every corner.
And it's for free for everyone to see.
Henry Baelskaai is the place to be.
Regards
Chris
