Good value on board air system?

Had the ARB setup years ago on the Discovery, it was..........adequate. Looking to fit something with a bit more oomph, IIRC someone has fitted a compressor under the drivers seat? I have removed the rear passenger heater today and sure enough a fair bit of space to be found. This is more for the occasional quick air up after being off road awhile and not for every day use, perhaps a small air tank for reserve?

Unsure of the cost versus value side, due to being an impatient sod I have spent a lot of money in the past and found I could have done something for half the price with the same result if I had researched a little more, as I am getting older, more mature and sensible (just came on last week :icon-surprised:) I have to be a bit careful with the monthly disposable dinero, thoughts?

That will be Chas with his "oh, the vibrations" under-seat compressor

I want the same as you do. I have an ARB mounted in the engine bay, but although reliable, it's painfully slow.

What I do want is a receiver, considering having one made up from a fire extinguisher canister. At the moment I run the hose and trigger direct from the pump, but with a receiver I could get a reasonable psi and volume into a receiver, before I need it, go and make a cuppa, smoke a fag, whatever, then whoosh, it would be so nice.

Also considering upgrading the compressor for a bigger capacity, want, want, want.....

Here you go Dave, I fitted the ARB Twin setup a couple of years ago, still happy with it.

Also look at the Blue Tongue Twin Tongue compressor (made by Thomas).

Ah Chas.......talk to me......oh and Clive. :icon-biggrin:

I can't find the thread I posted about it but from memory I said I got it from the USA from this seller http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ARB-ON-BO...X4-OFF-ROAD-/281619031423?hash=item4191cd657f it looks like his prices have risen a bit, for about £400ish, after paying shipping and import duties it worked out to round about £60 less then buying it in the UK.
After removing the heater it will fit nicely under the drivers seat with slight fettling to the floor with a tapping stick.
I have a 2:5 gall tank behind the passenger seat which IIRC the compressor fills in 1:5 mins (I can't check at the mo because I have the electrics disconnected for something else)
It hasn't been used a great deal but when it's been needed it's the dogs danglys

Thanks for the reminder of that thread BAT, I've just read it through again.

I can't believe its been 2 years since, and I still have no tank, no fixed outlets, still connect under the bonnet, One day I'll get to it and have the setup I want

Thanks for the heads up Chas, also the other replies. As of now I have taken out the heater, the pipes were old and rusty when I got the car so they were taken out awhile back, now just need to fill the space. Shame there is not really enough space for a converted AC compressor under the bonnet. I also noted the comments in threads about noise when mounted under the seats, kids off hand and I would be outside anyway. Good debate on the tank issue, my Discovery had the ARB mounted under the bonnet, used it all the time for the lockers and I think if I had them and the pump was inside it would get on my nerves, with a tank you could fill and leave the pump off for quite a few uses before the tank was depleted. The single pump ARB was soooo slow at airing up the tyres it was a PITA.

For me it will be just for tyres so the jury is still out on the tank, as an asides a tank mounted underneath may give the Spanish MOT inspection guys the jitters, if you had seen the palaver over the 8 seats at the last inspection you would understand.

ITMT I will see what other ideas/product suggestions come up.

Many thanks

I suppose it is noisy, but as I'm always on my own it's not really a problem and as you say it doesn't have to be on all the time.

Still turning over the tank idea, it is good to have blast of air for reseating the tyre bead but, when on the HGV's we used lighter fuel, a good squirt and throw a match at it, a bit redneck but you did not earn money parked at the side of the road with a flat. Of course it is illegal to pay bonus to lorry drivers and we never were..........

Matt Savage sell all the toys you need to build an on-board air sytem with different capacities and duty cycles. Worth having a look ...

Edited out the goddam autocorrect nonsense lol

Thanks for that Gary, his site appears to be down at the moment, I will check back later.

And Paul, behave yourself! :icon-biggrin:

I went with the twin ARB set up like Chas, but mine's under the bonnet. Not a cheap pump, but Matt did me a decent deal at the time. I still intend to fit a small tank underneath. I'd like a connection on the other side of the engine bay just to make doing the rear tyres a little easier. I've miles of that 6mm pipe so a shame not to use it somewhere.

Looking neat sat in there Chris, did you have to relocate anything to make space for it?

It's on the build thread Clive. It's on a platform where the ABS would normally go

Does it make much noise inside from there Chris? Neat install BTW.

Cheers. Uhrr, well you can hear it if the engine's off, but it's more a vibration than a noise as such. But I don't have children sleeping there whilst trying to blow tyres up in the middle of the night so not quite sure how to pitch the answer. It's on rubber mounts so I guess it could be worse. I like this unit because it's all in the box, you know? No messing. And it has it's own cooling fans. When you power up, all you hear when you're under the bonnet is the faint hum of the fans. I have never had it get hot yet. The cables are nice and thick and the connector blocks are proper OEM quality. As it has a pressure cut off, it only runs for 2 seconds and stops when not supplying air. With a tank of course it would run for a minute.

Good tip cheers
I can just 'snift' the coupling though which will blow out any crap
But I think I've a cover somewhere
