Halfords 0w 30 synthetic oil, 4l, £10.......?

"While stocks last". So either they're either punting out excess stock cheap, or there's hardly any at that price but it'll get you in the door.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Just reserved 16l for collection from my local store - though I could have had free delivery too (on orders > £30).

I doubt Halfords have their own refinery. So their stuff is probably rebranded from one of the main manufacturers. If "Tesco" fuel is good enough for my Cruiser and Yaris, then "Halfords" oil will do fine. :)

Sent from my GT-I9100P

Halfords obviously do not refine their own oil so it will be from one of the major players. Back in the 90's I was told it was Shell but don't know for definate if it was or still is.

My view is that as long as it meets the SaE 5W30 API SM/CF APEA etc (whatever they mean!) then I'm happy. £2.50 a litre for a 5w30 fully synth is a bargain.

It is going into a 17 year old vehicle with 150k+ miles and worth around £3k after all. Some might say its lucky to have its oil changed at all! :icon-wink:

Add : The "data sheet" on the Halfords site for this oil says it is from "Comma oils and Chemicals". So perhaps not a Chateau Rothschild but more like a Waitrose Merlot. :icon-biggrin:

Add2: Both my truck and Yaris have always been run on FS since we bought them back in 2004. Never had issues with leaks, though recently, the Collie's rocker cover gaskets seem to have seen better days.

Is it fully synthetic?

If so, I would mix it with a semi-synthetic and then use it.

I put in fully-synthetic in my LJ78 and it leaked like me old nan.

semi has mineral oil as a base, so you will end up with a sort of super-semi-synthetic.

Using FS in an old high mileage engine there is a risk of leaks due to the oils higher detergency, unless you're sure the engine's been run on FS or SS all it's life.

Add. Comma used to be owned by Esso (Exxon/Mobil) but was sold in 2012 apparently.

Been in my local Halfrauds this afternoon, NO offer on any oil at all.

These are daily offers.

Register on their website for the emails.

Click the link in the first post of this thread and the deal still seems to be available - at least it allows me to add 4l to my basket @£10 each and takes me to checkout.

Not sure about the FS in an old'ish engine.

I have always sent my 120 to Toyota for the services.
In-fact, it is going there on Monday for service.
I have also asked them to grease up the slip joints and the spider couplings on the prop shafts as an extra while she is up on the lift.

Not sure what oil Toyota main dealers put in, but it must be good, as it doesn't need any topping up from one yearly service to the next.

Looking back at my service history, she looks to have had some thing like 40 services to date, which include main services and intermediate where just oils and filters were changed.

According to the parts guy in our local Toyota dealer, Toyota branded oil is Mobil. Checked our local Halfords yesterday and all the 0W50 has gone but most of the other grades are to be had including SS 10w40 at £10/5L. That would be the grade I went for personally.

Ditto, that's what I use.

Not quite the same I know, but when I changed my front diff oil I had synthetic put in, peed it out both seals which then had to be replaced, gone back to semi since.

Don't fall into the trap that main do dealers a better job.

When I bought my car it was one owner with fsh at Bentley's in Warrington, I took it for a full fluid change to a local 4x4 specialist for a full fluids change.when I picked it up he thought it had never been serviced. He ( a friend ) said the props had not been greased in a long, long time, and the front diff plug was siezed in. When he got it out he said he didn't think the diff oil had ever been changed.

I'll always change my own oil - iirc it's arounf £90 (?) at a main dealers. This oil change will cost me £28, done with a toyota oil filter and synthetic oil.

Similar with mine. After I bought it in 2004, I used to take it to the local Toyota dealer for all servicing at considerable expense. However, after a few years had a mechanic friend look over it and do a "health check". Their observations were very similar to your friends. The props looked as if they had never been greased and the rear diff plug was seized and the oil looked as if it had never been changed.

Never been back to a Toyota dealer for servicing since 2007.

A friend of mine used to spray sump bolts etc with a matte lacquer prior to having his bike serviced and it was always the big garages that never touched the nuts so didn't damaged the lacquer and so hadn't changed the oil and did not get payed :icon-wink:

As FBD says don't trust a main dealer, not 4x4 i know but i bought a second hand BMW 530d sport a few years back from a main BMW dealer, before i picked it up it was to have a full service, oils filters & anything that needed doing, picked it up & a few days later my boy who's a mechanic says lets bung it on the ramp & look it over, oil had been changed but not the filter, fuel filter not changed old one well rusted, air filter not changed, pollen filter not changed, brake fluid low, wheels hadn't been off as they were stuck fast to the discs, front pads had probably 500 miles left on them if lucky, tyre pressures all low & different, i could go on, they had however reset the service lights,
Took it back & pointed things out & groval groval groval.
NEVER will use a main dealer again

I see some of you have had bad experience at main dealers.

I am on first name terms, and do believe that what I ask to be done, is done.
I usually book a "while you wait" service, take my laptop with me for their free internet.
Also viewing the technicians at work is no problem.

Shame some main dealers let the side down.
