Having a bad day.

It's got 'Snap-On' written on it........Did you think it would be reasonably priced??:icon-rolleyes:

Alot of people who dont work in a garage dont get snap on tools they are 'king exspensive but they work much better then anything else. When you get 1 chance to 6ndo something i will always go with a snapon tool over anything else.

I have the same withe box but added the extra center drawers and a small side cabenet. Gary Iis right about the weight they are horrendously heavy.

Yep they're expensive! 90% of my tools are snap on and I wouldn't be without them. Stu is right they just work when you need them to work, when they break you get it replaced without hassle most of the time.

I looked at the centre drawers but use the top for paper work etc and it would've been too high, went for the bigger side cabinet instead. Do have a desk next to my box but with 2 computers (1 diagnostic and a pc) a printer and a phone it doesn't leave much space for all the paper work (ridiculous amounts of paper work) used to have a white one, older classic model with chrome trims etc.

Good luck to him Pete, I enjoy working on them tbh. Have their problems but keeps the day interesting sometimes. Must admit to actually enjoying my job, been there 10 years and no plans to move (longest serving tech in the bmw workshop :icon-biggrin:)

I've heard them nicknamed "Strap-On"....

It's good having a mate in the trade sometimes, as he'll sometimes bring his more specialist tools round to help work on the car... for example I needed a decent power rattle gun to do the timing belt on the 4Runner, and he was going to help me.... All of a sudden I get a message saying "is this what we need?" and a picture of a $300 AEG skin only rattle gun....

I like the Sidchrome tools we get in Australia; I have a mate who got as his wedding present from his wife a set of Sidchrome Sockets....

Having been working on a property where there was a maintenance shed (and 3x mechanics) I know that they don't lend tools, so I always try to use my own, until I don't have the right ones.

As my comment has been quoted a couple of times, I thought I had better explain my (non expert) opinion.
I work in an agricultural dealership which has a workshop full of mechanics. It makes me laugh when the Snap-On man turns up and they all file out to look at the nice shiney tools all laid out in his (very well set up I have to admit) van. They all walk past the range of tools we sell (mainly Teng), quite often clutching broken items they have previously bought, looking to get a replacement I don't see Snap-On being that much better quality than many other tool suppliers, it's just had very good marketing. Many other premium tool makes also offer 'lifetime' guarantee, but with the horrendous prices of the Snap-On stuff, they can afford to replace items quite a few times. With the staff discount offered by the company I work for, the mechanics/fitters/technicians can buy similar quality tools with 'lifetime' guarantee at a fraction of the Snap-On prices but like I said, it's had fantastic marketing (like many other 'premium' brands) and is considered to be way better quality than the rest. All this is just my opinion obviously.

And mine mate. Buying anything for the 'name' has never interested me, especially when there's alternatives just as good or even better for a fraction of the cost.

I have 2 sets of tools, my work stuff which is about 90% snap on and insured for £18k (I have more then just spanners and sockets)
I agree some snap on stuff is over priced and I won't buy it.

I have my at home tools, in a budget roll cab and a Mac tools top box (my first box combo from an apprentice ) this has cheaper tools, most live in the boot of the 80. There's halfords stuff and even a set of snap on screw drivers (won them in a prize drawer few years ago) plus all my metal working tools etc.

Can I tell the difference between the cheaper stuff and snap on stuff......yes I can! The sockets aren't the same quality, same with the spanners and ratchets, is it a problem at home... no it isn't.
Would it become an issue at work, yes it would tbh.

I have sockets and ratchets etc that have been used thousands of times, they've been abused sometimes and yes they do break but not very often, wear is minimal on the sockets and spanners, a 13mm socket will fit a 13mm nut first time I use it and 15 years down the line (trust me it does) the ratchets work as well as the day I felt raped buying them and haven't ever let me down. Gotta remember these are used every day.

Some of my halfords sockets at home aren't always a great fit and 'bite' on rusted nuts and normal ones tbh.

The tool boxes are expensive but the quality differnece between them and stuff like sealey, Clarke, halfords etc is very noticeable. Our apprentice has just bought his first box, a halfords professional one, perfect for an apprentice but won't last. Very flimsy metal, drawer runners are poor quality etc.
