HDJ80 Oil Warning Lamp

Hi
I've just picked up a 1995 Toyota Landcruiser HDJ80 and wondering if anyone
can shed any light on a problem I'm looking to resolve.
When the engine warms up (after about 10 minutes running) and the revs drop
below 2000 rpm I get and orange oil can appearing on the dash. This seems
to be related to the oil pressure indicator as the warning lamp goes out
with increased oil pressure (engine revs above 2000 rpm).
The oil level is fine and there are no issues with engine temp.
I'm hoping this issue will be resolved when I change the oil but was
wondering if anybody could suggest any other areas to look at while I've got
the sump empty. Is there any easy way to check the performance of the oil
pump on these vehicles or are they hard to replace? Can't think of anything
else to check so any ideas welcome.
Cheers

Hi Brett
I have no experience of HDJ80 oil warning lamps, but I had similar case in
our old 30ft fishing boat with Leyland diesel from 70`s. When engine was on
idle oil lamp was glowing. Not as bright when just power was connected, but
glowing still. I asked about this from repair shop and mechanic told not to
worry. Tolerance of the pressure sensor just was so wide it gave signal even
when idling.
So maybe there is not any major problem with your LC. But I am not an expert
on this matter.
Cheers,
osku

Brett,
Your 80 may be running winter oil, which is thinner. Thinner but
it does get round the engine. With a thicker oil, such as a 15W/40 the
gauge may go out.

Hi,
It could be low oil pressure, change the oil is probably the first port of
call.
Big end Bearings it could be, but also it could be a dodgy oil pressure
sender or dodgy dashboard gauge.
You best bet is to rig a pressure gauge to where the oil pressure sender is
and see what the actual pressure is, check if it's in tolerance which can be
found in the workshop manual.
Manuals can be found online at http://daemon4x4.org/portal/downloads.php,
you will need a bittorrent client probably.
It could also be a stuck(open) pressure relief valve or loss of pressure
somewhere else in the system.
Let us know how it goes.
Regards
Martin.

Has it got a genuine Toyota oil filter? In the past, I can recall poor
quality filters affecting oil pressure.

Hi guys
Thanks for the emails. I'm still working on this one... Current thinking
is that it must be a dodgy sensor (at least I hope that's all it is) as
I've changed the oil and that hasn't sorted the problem.
The warning light that is coming on is supposedly only related to low oil
level (according to the Toyota Manual) and I know for certain that this
isn't a problem as it's sitting right on full on the dip stick. It does
seem odd that the warning goes out with increased revs (and a little
concerning) but I'm going to try replacing the sensor and see if that sorts
it out.
Will let you know if that resolves the issue, thanks again for the feedback.
