Hi Benoit,
I have only ever come across HDJ81s from Japan, I've not noticed if it
applies to any particular year or level of trim. I just read as being
an HDJ80 from Japan.

Doesn't give specific information but for LC body styles I put the keyword
into Google Images search. Quite a few in Canada all around 1990, 1991?
Good for calling up the more odd ball or specialist versions.

Hi Malcolm,
Are you sure they aren't imports? As far as I recall I don't think
Toyota ever sold the Land Cruiser in Canada (surprisingly), however
they have a 15year rule where it is easier to import cars older than
15years which might account for the 1990 and 1991 models over there.
Wayne Smith has been doing quite well out of this with

Your right, the import rule is based on age, just seemed to be lots, having
peered at some of the they doo seem to be RHD.
I think your also right about Toyota not selling LC in Canada, perhaps they
do now, similar to how they market in the UK, ie badly with only a very
limited range of vehicles in LC and Hilux at most dealers (in the north
atleast). I do know the 40 series Land Cruiser was imported into Canada for
use in the mines as an off road vehicle only.

As I said at the beginning of this thread, HDJ81 is japan specific. The 81
may well refer to changes and upgrades - my car is an auto with the o/d
button on the gear shift, all three diff lockers, 5 seats, no sliding
windows in the back, aircon, no abs, etc etc. It did also have a strange
camping kit in the boot when I got it, including a small sink, two water
containers, one for fresh the other for waste, a small single ring gas
burner that runs off gas cartridges. It also has differences on the fuel
side but these may be on other cars that are UK or europe spec.

But how could there be a hdj81 in German now for sale if it is only
from Japon thence only with rhd?
Now I we are all so more confused than Princess Diana's driver on that
fatale night.
I do not intent to make light of some sad situationn affecting us
France Uk relationships!
But what butt cheeks devil is at the end of daylight a hdj81?

Then I must be wrong and 81 means something other than just from japan. Must
refer to a small engine mod I think.
Not sure if the driver was confused - peut etre il etait la tete de turc.

Benoit.
HDJ81 is a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) HDJ80. Mostly came with Suede or fabric rather than Leather or Fabric, most are 5 seaters, no sliding rear side windows, most with no front and rear diff locks. However options list still existed for 8 seat, twin A/C, factory lift, winch, camping gear, front and rear diff locks, adjustable suspension (sport or standard). Facelift came at the same time as rest of the world, however unlik the UK you can still get a late model with the 1HD-FT engine and auto box.

The Julien must certain know this answer, what is hdj81?

OK the guys, then this must mean that the hdj81 we did see for sale in
German most be either rhd or the guy needs to put some water in his
wines.
But some French guys also says they have 81 and they are lhd. French
guys need less wine too.

Benoit.
It could be that the HDJ81 was also made as LHD for other parts of the Asian market. It certainly was not for the UK, Europe or US. On the EPC it only appears on the Japanese Disks not the Euro or US market ones.
Other possibility is that it is a conversion.
