Head gasket renewal needed

Hi all

Long time no speak.

My FZJ80 has sprung a head gasket and my local, usually very good motor
engineers have quoted me a very silly seeming price to change it.

Does anyone know of a capable person or company capable of doing this job
for a reasonable price?

Or does anyone on here have the capability to do the job and would like to
earn some tokens?

I=92m in Worcester and the vehicle is driveable, just.

The price I=92ve been quoted seems to me to be a =93We don=92t really want this

Mine cost me just over =A3800 GP. It's a known issue, apparently, and there's a revised gasket available as a replacement. Take a look at
the 80scool list, where there are a lot more petrol engined vehicles
in Oz and USA.
I assume it's gone between cylinder 5 & 6?

Thanks Neill

Yes mine=92s gone between 5 and 6 on the exhaust side.

How long ago did you have yours done, and where?

If it=92s a known issue and the gasket has been redesigned was it the subject
of any recall and has anyone approached Toyo about paying for it?

Do you have a link to any 80scool articles?

My quote was for =A31300 !!!! I would have thought =A3800 was steep but that=92s
now looking cheap.

Peter,

I had a freelander head gasket done a couple of years ago, also had the
clutch and timing belt replaced at the same time round =A3850 for the lot =96
done by a local garage, quite a small outfit but the mechanic is ex Land
Rover, sort of comparable only a little 4 pot engine, little clutch but
quite a bit of work as the head bolts hold the crank on.

Given the regularity of failure on the K series head gasket, particularly
when fitted to the Freelander I suppose I had the advantage of a head gasket
being almost routine. I suspect, as you said, that you garage doesn=92t want
to tackle it =96 it that is the case I would find another garage but don=92t try
to drive too far!

It's big job, no mistake and a big engine, too.
It's a know issue, for sure. You could try Toyota GB and you might
get help, depending upon age, mileage, service history. In the USA, I believe they have helped people. They may tell you that TGB is a
separate company and they have different waranties for different
countries etc. This ain't true any more, as TGB is now owned by
Toyota Motor Corp.
I found out about the 'known issue' thing after I'd had mine done
after reading on 80'scool in January. It went 24 hours before
departing for Sweden for a month's work. I delayed my boat sailing
for 24 hours and made it, total repair time 48 hours. Had it done
locally by a general mechanics workshop. Judging by the swearing, I
don't think they'd quote that price again....
I've since sold it, as it was crippling on fuel, even worse than I
expected it to be, plus I just don't need it right now. It was superb in Sweden, heavily loaded, plus sometimes towing and started first
time every time down to -25 (we didn't try to on the day it was -35,
the locals said it was a Bad Thing To Do). Would I buy another? Yes,
but I'd need a job for it to do to justify it's keep and right now, I don't have that need.
The old FJ62 is going to be attacked with a welder and grinder soon. It's been fine for general mucking about locally, going to the tip,
the beach, a bit of off roading in Yorkshire, towing stuff etc, so I
think it deserves a happy retirement.
Regarding links, I asked the question on 80scool, you'll need to sign up, but got a response fairly quickly.
Hope this helps,
Neill W

Just going outside at -35 sounds like a Bad Thing To Do.

It=92s when you see a Land Cruiser or the like realy working that you realise
that is what they are really good at... another right tool for the job

As regards a good mechanic I can recommend one up here in Stourbridge

I like my LR mechanic, I have even got him to say he will work on my Toyota
axles if I provide the parts, not sure he would tackle an engine like yours,
I don=92t doubt he could do it but he wouldn=92t know if special tools were
required and it would take much longer than doing the same thing on a disco
so wouldn=92t be economic, it=92s just a matter of finding the ex Toyota
mechanics!

Don't drive it.....
If you have to, get it trucked. As soon as I spotted mine, I stopped. Restarted it once after a new minutes and realised the problem, then
called for a truck. I probably only drove it for 1 mile, but the head still needed skimming.

I can probably get the LC trailered to Stourbridge, it=92s not so far.

Certainly the safest thing to do.

On the freelander I noticed the coolant needed topping up for the first time
ever, topped it up and drove the mile and a half, in winter with no traffic,
any other circumstances and I would have towed it, alloy block with liners
and an alloy head!

On the Crossfire, 3.2L V6 Mercedes engine, all alloy, not even cylinder
liners, I might as well ditch the car and never go back (or go see the bank
manager, no margin at all on that one is it goes wrong and overheats!)

Don't drive it.....

If you have to, get it trucked. As soon as I spotted mine, I stopped.
Restarted it once after a new minutes and realised the problem, then called
for a truck. I probably only drove it for 1 mile, but the head still needed
skimming.

Hi peter
Long time no see, how is life on your very own LC forum now a days hope
its going well.
As regards a good mechanic I can recommend one up here in Stourbridge
but it=92s at least 40m from you. plus you will have to get the car to him
Would you like the details?
I have asked him and he says he can do it for about =A3700. But hat depend
on the state of the head once he takes it off. As if you have driven
with it gone for too long, you may have to get it skimmed

Hi Guys
The head gasket went on mine a few years ago just at the back in the corner.
I only noticed it was gone from the hissing/ticking sound but even at that it was hard to make out over the noise of all the other bits making noise in the engine bay including the exhaust.
I drove it to a guy about 100 miles away and he confirmed it was the head gasket and he booked it in for a later time.
Is there degrees of failure because I must have driven a few hundred miles with the ticking going on.
I did not have any mixing of oil or coolant at any stage or lose of either.
Is it a thing that usually goes gradually and then all at once or just gradually.
Once it starts to go as you have said dont drive it or would that depend on the severity of it.

Yes it exists. It was a little project I put together when I had a bit of
time on my hands - seemed like a good idea at the time :)

Nobody seemed / seems very interested to use it so it got left for dead. It
still exists out there on the interweb.
