Hi everyone I shall be thankfull if somebody can help me regarding the automatic transmission gear oil and filter change for my land cruiser GXR 2003 4 SPEED 6 VALVE ENGINE i just bought the car and the guy who owned it before me didnt changed the gear oil and filter since he bought the car in 2003 the cars odometer shows 2lakh and 18000km(218000) if I change the gear oil and filter now wether there are chances for gear to become out of order please help me whats the best advice should i go for the change presently there are no problems withe the transmission

Changing the oil (provided you put the correct ATF oil in) won't break anything. You risk more damage leaving the old oil in! Draining all the oil is difficult in one attempt as only 6l drains out but the total capacity is around 15l. So you can either do multiple drains (6l per time) and top up with new oil, or get a transmission specialist to flush all the old oil out and replace with good quality synthetic ATF.

Cheers,

I agree, nothing is guaranteed but changing the oil should only be a good thing. Drain it, fill it, drive it for a day, drain it, fill it, repeat this 3 or 4 times and almost all the oil will be fresh and at that many km's your gearbox deserves it ;) If you plan to change the filter, do it before the last drain and fill, or just clean the existing one.

The 4-speed is the easy one. (A 2003 (mnf.date) could also have been a 5-sp). Just drain and fill a few times, as said above. There is no real filter, but a mesh strainer. Drop the pan and have a look. There are also 4 ? little magnets inside the pan which are very attractive to little metal shavings prowling about. Have some fipg ready for the pan.

A good atf (synt.) could make the gear-shifts smoother, and rejuvenate the old box.

Thanks for your advice but I went to a local toyota motor dealer to have the transmission oil and filter changed and the guy at the centre told me that they can change the oil and filter but not on their responsibility if the transmission will become bad after changing the oil the centre will not be responsible could you tell me why an authorised toyota dealer says like this to me.

Looks like they don't know what they're doing. Find someone/somwhere else.

but they are the authorised toyota dealer how come they dont know what they are doining they are the biggest dealer in the kingdom.

Not specific to 100 series transmissions but I have read that if an auto box's friction plates are very worn they rely on the friction plate material suspended in the fluid for the plates to work. If this old and very dirty fluid is removed and replaced with fresh clean fluid the worn friction plates may not engage gears any more. Not sure if this applies to 100 series gearboxes or if its at all true/possible.``

So that means i should not take the risk of changing the gear oil cause if after 2 lakh kilometers if tthe friction plates are worn out and i put new oil the gear may stop engaging theres another school of thought that dont change all the old oil at once change half of old oil and replace half with new oil then second half changed after some time what is your opinion.

If you intend to keep the truck flush the old fluid out and replace it with new as dirty fluid will mess with the solenoids, filters and lubrication. If the friction plates are worn the box will fail sooner or later any way so you may only be postponing the inevitable while risking damaging a perfectly good gearbox. No brainier if you want to keep the truck.
