HTC Desire problems and back up

Keep getting error messages on HTC Desire, there are loads of fixes online to sort it such as this:

But it doesnt work. What is the best way to do a phone backup so i can do a factory reset and not loose any info?

Would be best if i could do it to the internal micro SD card so easy to reinstall afterwards.

And before anyone says it, i know there are other phones out there that some consider better but stuck with this one for now.

If you have a gmail account, you should be fine on the contacts an app called brainapp will keep and reinstall your apps. For SMS, there are a number of apps to back up to gmail.
