Kinda off topic, as there are no TLC components
But this is what I'm building at the moment

Trying to keep as many LR components as possible to keep the build cheap and easily fixable.
Being able to use original chassis mounts with rubbers speeded up the build, so doing the same all round made sense.
Rubber should help with vibration etc, I'm going to be sat in there for 8 hours when competing.
I've just finished the steering, I've used rose/heim joints there, to join the Land Rover and Unimog parts together.

John,
Don't Hummers also use Portal axles. These give a good advantage off road.
Unimogs - a great vehicle - also use Portal axles.
I saw a pair of MB 406 axles on Ebay a few weeks ago.
An 80 with portal axles - interesting prospect - has it been done ?
Regards Gareth Jones
PS - Mum is off to the Balkans again this year - Montenegro this time. Hope you are well.

Ah yes - the Laplander.
Stop drooling - get out the tape measure and the mig welder - lets get building !!

Andrew very interesting, I see you have kept the rubber suspension. You chose not to use Rose joints ( Heim joints ) , any reason ? I have seen them used on quite a few specials.

I have been watching that project with interest.
You can see the home page and full build pics starting at:

As far as I know they build was pretty painless and the results have
been surpisingly good.

It's an interesting project but I couldn't live with the drum brakes
which is a shame. Did I see someone was making portal conversions for
standard 80 axles somewhere as well? I'm sure I saw something like that
but can't see the link anymore.
Best regards,
Jon.

Hi Jon,
I'm sure you are right - I recall some US based company doing a kit.
