I'm Back!!

Hi,
Just a quick note to say that I have just got back from a 5 week trip
down to Morocco - lots learnt, lots of stories to tell, etc, but first
need to sort through the 1000's of messages in my mailbox.
With regards the laptops, the deall fell through because we couldn't
get enough people in time. If you are still interested and I gan get
half a dozen or so people interested, I'll get Ralph to keep an eye out
for another similar offer.
Catch you later over the weekend.

Julian,
OMG! You've survived ! It's been quite a while and I thought maybe you
got lost or something :) Will you drop your route into Google Earth
for us to see?

Hi Roman,
Almost, forgot to test my GPS until we left to find it wasn't working,
managed to eventually fix it in Meknes a couple of days after arriving
in Maroc - luckilly I had a soldering iron with me.
I will try, still need to suss out that side of TTQV.
We jumped around a bit, but camped in the High Atlas, in the dunes of
Erg Chebbi as well on the beaches south of Essouira so saw a fair bit.

Hi Jeff,
Nothing major, ran like a dream.
Was thinking of you as I drove along a beach south of Essouira looking
for somewhere to camp - tide coming in and all that - managed to drive
up a semi cliff to a wonderful (if windswept) camping spot above the
beach - was surprised the car made it, wife was panicking a bit by this
stage!

Hi Jeremy,
The children and I loved it, but Gilly wasn't a fan - too much dirt
(rubbish wise as opposed to mud), too many people seemingly wanting a
piece of you every time you stopped and a lot of staring from the
Moroccan men (like waling past a building site 24/7) - she would never
go back, but I certainly would - we only scratched the surface really.
I'll try to call you at some point.

Good. It's useful to have a soldering iron, but a backup nav system is
even more useful.
Create a new database, copy all track points into one Track folder,
run Track Processor to smooth the path and reduce track point number,
then click Export icon and chose "Export to Google Earth".
Here's one I made earlier for my Libya trip:
http://www.zen59375.zen.co.uk/public/saharatravel07/Libya2007ss.kmz
Copy the link and past in GE to open as a new file.
When you have the photos ready, you may use another TTQV function -
attaching pictures to tracks.

Bit of a culture clash, I suppose. Morocco is notorious for begging
kids and hustlers. But they are a small nuisance compared to kids
throwing stones at passing cars. Hope you did not encounter them, like
we did going across a village up the Todra Gorge. Still, North
Morocco, compared to what you find further south of lat 30N, is a very
European-like country, and for the French it's like an extension of
their southern departments.

Hi Roman,
Didn't get that, although a couple spat at the car in disgust after we
didn't give them anything - didn't help that my girls had coloured pens
on display in seat organisers on the back of the front seats.
We did the trip up the Todra gorge on the way up staying up at Auberge
Bidou (sp?) and then heading on up north from there the next day. I
have to say some of the people we came across in some of the villages
didn't seem the most friendly, although we just smiled and waved all the
way through - they get slighty thrown byt 3 blonde girls in the back
seats waving back at them.
When did you go up Todra - they had 6 days solid rain last october that
has washed a lot of the road away through the actual gorge - ended up
driving up the river bed in a few places - I kept on asking Gilly if she
could hear low rumbling noises (flash flood) - she was getting a bit
nervous because it had been wet.
In Meknes we were treated like royaly with the children - three blonde
girls, but found the locals more of a pain further south on the main 4x4
pistes where they are used to convoys of French or Spanish 4x4s. On the
less well known pistes they were a lot more friendly.

No don't, I have already spent 20 minutes looking at Romans track and
getting jealous.
Seriously though, fantastic technology, like the idea of attaching photos to
the track.
Google earth always amazes me, one of the Libyan highways I could see
vehicles and even measure an artic truck at 15 metres, also saw some large
circles that measured 800m across, lots of them grouped together stretching
about 12km long, photo from some google earth user confirmed they were
irrigated fields.
Even seen the results of some of my efforts on google earth - one of our
containerised generators is visiable from space.

Hi John,
First time I have used a track in GE. I went to FILE on the menu, then
selected OPEN, when the dialogue box opened I pasted the link into the
filename box. As a short cut once GE is open you can use Ctrl+O to bring up
the dialogue box.

John,
You can use the *.kmz file either as Malcolm did or save it to disk
and open from there.

Re >they get slighty thrown byt 3 blonde girls in the back seats waving back at them.

I wasn't lucky enough to have 3 blonds in the back of my cruiser when in Morocco but Limousine Spec tinted windows in the n=3Dback was great at keeping temperatures down and prying eyes out

Would recommend this for anyone going that way!!

Cheers

My neighbour's daughter was raped at gunpoint while travelling through the "Bible Belt" in the U.S. last year. Her only crime was to ask for directions.
I guess they were deadly serious Christians.

Hi Reno,
Not necessarily, in Morocco they are becoming very liberal with the new
King giving women rights so women to a degree can wear what they want
for example for the first time they have been able to see the Queens
face - which was previously always covered.
Also it is not so important for children to follow the traditions of
covering up the hair/face.
That could have happened anywhere.
As can any nation/religion.
