Importing tools

Hi,
Have anyone got experience of importing tool kits and the like from the States or Canada ? I want to import a new tool kit which is considerably cheaper than here but I'm not sure on how to avoid import duty as I can get my brother to send it from Canada . Thanks

I've imported truck parts and things from the states in the past. I think if it's declared as a gift or below a certain value they don't charge you. The most I've been charged is about £200 including handling fees but that was a suspension kit with trailing arms etc etc. My locker was declared as parts for testing with no value and got a small handling fee.
