Subject: Irish green laning
Alright John
Re you thought the green laning thing was vertually dead here.
Depends what you call green laning i suppose.
Myself and a few lads do a fair bit of diving year round. This takes us
to all kinds of remote places on the south west & north coast (east
being too close to Sellafield). When the weather's bad and it's too
early to go to the pub we get the OS maps out and hit whatever tracks
and lanes we can find - up to TV mast access roads and down bogs -
whatever. I call this green laning. If you have a Caoilte (Irish
Forestry) key then you can get access into miles and miles of forestry
roads - not technically legal but green laning.
In the summer we hit the vast Peat bogs harvested by Bord N Mona in
Kildare. Acres and acres of perfectly flat bog. This we call Brown
Laning and very risky. Soft spots claimed 3 vehicles on us in 1 night.
Took 8 wheeler tractors to get us out. The same night a mitsubishi
Pajero caught fire - peat build up on the exhaust!! - Hilarioous.
At christmas we hit the Tank tracks on the Curragh. This is very risky
as the MP's can arrest you & take your LC. The MP's are normally not
about at Christmas.
If I was in the UK then i'm sure some organisation would class the
above as "Irresponsible" in some shape way or form. But that's the
problem as I see it. Too many people in too many organisations (with
politicians) trying to organise and dictate what you can and can't do.
Overregulationitis.
And I haven't mentioned hunting as this is strictly 4x4!
So John. As the Nike man says - "Just Do It!"
.........because the end is nigh
Cheers
Niall
PS - do you want to come over to the Curragh some day - the Tank tracks
are great. But the MP's might impound your LC.......

Will make you an honary member of the bog hopping club!
We meet in the sinking pub - I kid you not. The pub is sinking. You
have to use a "chuck " to stop your pint sliding off the end of the
bar.
The locals are like extras from Deliverance
Niall

This is getting hilarious.
U should do a 'secret' (don't tell the 4x4 club boys) video taping session.
Starting with the phone call (...boys lets do a midnight full moon run on
the bog and some scaring)
Then do the meet-up in the pub with the sliding beers on the counter (just
like the western movies huh)
while doing that - add some special ingredients 2 some tail-pipes etc. 2
make 4 some interesting special effects later
Also install some hidden web-cams/mics in the other trucks
modify their GPS units 2 take one/two into the bog 'hole' (of course have
some brandy, hot tea, blanket, off-night shift nurses etc... handy and the
odd just lying around 8 wheel tractor :)
....
Upload the video with witty commentary onto uTube and sit back and become a
star and get all those Hollywood contracts 4 more of the same (u seen the
badass video production over here ?)

niall, you gotta invite me along for the next bog session! sounds like
a laugh. where is this pub?? sounds just like farringtons in rathcoffey,
but thats cos its sloping cos of a rotting floor! is there any
particular areas of the north or north west thats good for exploring???
we have a place in westport, sleeps 8 (or 30 if they dont mind using
sleeping bags) could be a good base to do some laning???

Haveen't been checking logging in recently.....
The pub is called Roses - it's near Rathangan - kinda. Have the GPS
c0-ordinates can sent them on to the list - you never know who might be
lost out in the bog & need a watering hole!
I worked in Westport for a while not much off roading..more in Donegal
but ytou need to be armed with a Caoilte key - have you got one?
