I've just worked out the MPG on my latest tank full, and it has dropped
to 26.5.
OK, I've been going a bit faster than normal, done a wee bit of towing,
and I forgot to pull down the radiator blind, but nevertheless my
machine always returns significantly worse mpg in the winter, which
makes me wonder if it is over-cooled.
I have the standard fan with viscous coupling, and I've always felt that
the coupling doesn't really achieve much. I can turn the fan by hand
against a stationary engine, albeit with some resistance, but
(subjectively) this resistance seems to be independent of engine
temperature.
Is it worth investigating further? Or do others see this drop in
economy in winter as well - perhaps due to the extra air resistance in
colder air plus the energy taken to heat the interior.
Opinions please!
(BTW I had a bit of a fiddle with the cruise control, and greased what I
could get at - which wasn't much. Yesterday I tried using it while
hauling a trailer up quite a steep hill, forcing it to use full
throttle, and it seemed fine, so maybe the problem was just the very
cold weather.)
