Is my 80 series over-cooled

I've just worked out the MPG on my latest tank full, and it has dropped
to 26.5.

OK, I've been going a bit faster than normal, done a wee bit of towing,
and I forgot to pull down the radiator blind, but nevertheless my
machine always returns significantly worse mpg in the winter, which
makes me wonder if it is over-cooled.

I have the standard fan with viscous coupling, and I've always felt that
the coupling doesn't really achieve much. I can turn the fan by hand
against a stationary engine, albeit with some resistance, but
(subjectively) this resistance seems to be independent of engine
temperature.

Is it worth investigating further? Or do others see this drop in
economy in winter as well - perhaps due to the extra air resistance in
colder air plus the energy taken to heat the interior.

Opinions please!

(BTW I had a bit of a fiddle with the cruise control, and greased what I
could get at - which wasn't much. Yesterday I tried using it while
hauling a trailer up quite a steep hill, forcing it to use full
throttle, and it seemed fine, so maybe the problem was just the very
cold weather.)

Yes, you're probably right Jon - a load of small things rather than one
big one.
I was just wondering out loud really, and thinking that maybe an
electric fan would be a good idea.

| I'm just thinking out loud Christopher but I think it's a function of
| taking longer to get up to operating temperature, lower tyre
pressures,
| denser air to move through and with our old style injector pumps
denser
| air leaning your fueling so it's less efficient and also needs more
right
| foot for the same amount of go.
|
| Best regards,
| Jon.

I'd be interested to try that - where are you at present?
BTW where does their thermostat go?

| I have a pair of 13" high flow Kenlowe's mounted in a frame I made
that
| fits the existing shroud mounting points if you want to borrow them
for an
| experiment.
|
| On a standard manual they might work very well and hardly ever be
needed.
|
| On my overweight (working hard), overfueled (higher EGT's), lifted
(pretty
| sure detrimental to air flow), auto (significant heat from the TC
pumped
| into the rad) they were on too often for my liking when worked hard at
low
| speed (5-10mph) for extended periods so I reverted to OEM.

| Stourbridge, DY9 0YE, about 10 minutes from junction 4 of the M5. At a
| guess I'd think a courier would charge =A325-=A330 if you don't pass this way
| or want to compare fuel costs with a courier.
|
I've got to go the Midlands via M5/M42 for the 28th Jan for work, and I have to be there early so there's a possibility that I can talk them into putting me up in a hotel the night before. Would you be around on Tuesday 27th?
It sounds like an eminently sensible thermostat fitting, and I particularly like the idea of totally reversible!
