You haven't stated the price for the two white 80s - can you give me an
idea about the cost of these? I'm interested enough to come and see
them, but would also like a picture of one of them before, if you can
manage this, I'd be grateful to you.
Kindest regards

Is there anything else I need to know about anything before I make the
call?
Sold as seen seems a tadge dodgy to me - does this mean that we can't
actually see anything? and just have to pay up and go? running
synth-less oil to me sends a warning out in my mind - for the likes of
myself and the other serious buyers this could mean a potential and
serious problem with the engine...

I may be wrong, but the HZJ series are with the non turbo version of
the diesel engine that you have.
For desert stuff I would want the power from the turbo.
Whilst you may not see many on the roads there are currently around 60
diesel LCs for sale on Autotrader for under ?10k, which is a fair old
selection - unless you are after something very specific I would look
at the UK HDJ80s first.
I have actually decided not to modify my current 80 for the time being,
but will look to get another in the next 12 months, but want the newest
80 that I can get and would want an automatic, so will be looking to
import one from Japan.

For desert stuff I want the turbo versions, obviously. But you know this anyway, if you don't you should ( :)) you know me. I don't want a non-turbo - a mate of mine wants this, not me.
Thing is I can't afford 8-10k for any landcruiser. I'm trying to reduce costs to myself 'cos funds are very much limited, but at the same time acquire another white hdt80.
I have just Euros1500 spare, nothing more than this.
I'll check autotrader at lunchtime (this is the only time I'm allowed access to the internet), but I can't see myself realistically parting with 10K that I'll never have.
You like auto gearboxes then?
I thought most of you lot wouldn't look twice at an auto gearbox cruiser?

Renate,
Just a quick word of warfning. I was reading one of the 4x4 mags.
last year about cruisers that were shipped through Gibralter, they can
get basic 100's, plastic seats etc. The snag to this is that you
cannot import them to the UK, even with SVA approval, as you would not
get it. This was the comment in the magazine. I do not know if this
would apply to 80's.
Regards, Clive.

Hi Renate,
Is it 1500euros or 15,000?
Either way, I would be more inclined to spend the money on the current
LC - you can only drive one at a time ;-)
Yes, the only advantage of a manual is the better fuel economy, I find
I can control the auto far better than a manual in tight corners and it
makes life a lot easier when going up sticky/sandy hills or through
bogs when you don't have hassle about changing gears.
OK you don't get the engine breaking of a manual, but position 2 or L
on the auto box is good enough.
My ideal scenario would be an auto box with a number of the mods done
by Automatic Transmissions in Aus:

Hi Clive,
I've not looked into it, but have also heard similar rumours about
importing the 105 series, which are 100s, but with a fixed front axle
instead of the independent suspension. They are sold in Aus and also
to NATO and other aid agencies but cannot be brought over here - not
sure why.

I have personally found that engine breaking in 2 and low is very good
indeed for the desert. It pulls up very quickly, almost
instantaneously, and acts like an extra brake (if such a thing existed).
I obviously cannot afford having the gearbox taken out, sorted and
replaced.
I would be interested in information on the effect extreme heat has on
it, for obvious reasons. I haven't had a problem with heat and the
gearbox as yet, and I guess it will be the same when I next go back to
Libya, but its always useful having this kind of information.
This current LC is an 'experiment', and I want to do stuff on this
first, then transfer that acquired skill and knowhow to another, but I
am getting another at some point, hopefully by the end of the year I'll
have a second white LC.
I'm still going ahead with mods this year but some I'm going to do
myself, to reduce costs further

Thanks for your comments - much appreciated.
Perhaps I need to rethink this route.
The issue I have with allowable imports, is the state of the engine,
not much else (well, apart from suspension and such), and since some of
them have never had synth oil and have done say, 300,000 plus miles I'm
thinking that this might be a bit dodgy.
Is there anybody out there on the list who has had personal experience
of high mileage LCs with organic oil and not synth? I would be
interested to hear their ideas and thoughts on this.
Cheers

The 105s can be bought in NL from Maarten Verschure, but they are only
sold as new with an engine tweak to make them meet EU emission

It's not about the type of oil as mucha as how often it has been changed ;-)
Mineral oil is thick hence more tolerant to cylinder/piston ring wear,
but it does snot improve the condition of the engine, just helps
masking it.
If you plan to buy a high mileage engine and hope it will run OK from
day one, it's a bit of a gamble. Fair enough if the LC is VERY cheap
as you can save funds for a possible engine rebuild. Perhaps it's a
better deal to buy two, three S/H engines shipped straight form Japan,
strip them down and use the good parts to make one good engine, then
sell the rest.

I hadn't thought of this route.
Regular oil change is pretty fundamental to my running a good LC
engine, mine needs a new lot but I'll do this soon enough.
I'm not sure about the high mileage thing, mine has done 138,000 plus,
but I do ponder mileage, obviously.
I'd be looking at having the engine checked over, and every other bit,
and this would cost me in the region of 2K or more probably. It would
be safer me considering a lower mileage car than 300,000k.
Just engines? how does that work then? I guess I have them shipped
over for much less than any good second land LC can be obtained in the
UK?, and if this is the case, then this is worth considering.

Hi Renate,
Unfortunately the only real weakness of the 80s auto box is the cooling -
if you are doing a lot of towing or desert driving it would be advisable
to fit an extra oil cooler.
Out of interest, why do you want to have another? I can understand that
you might want to replace the existing one with a new one, but you would
have invested so much time, effort and equipment in the current one that
it would be worth keeping.
