Lights for my roofrack

Interested to see Chas your web site re the X Lites.
I'm looking for some spots to put on my roofrack and would like some
recommendations.
Also be interested to know how people have dealt with the cabling.
The one thing I am concerned about is keeping the light off the bonnet
without illuminating the Atlas mts next time ~I'm over there.

Hi Jeremy,
I have a mixture of spot and wide angle Lightforce lamps
I tried keeping the lamps as far back as possible, that is as far as
the roofrack allows, but I'm not quite happy with the result. I guess
if it's a pencil beam you don't get much illumination, if it's wide
beam you get reflections. The bonnet is not a big problem if it's
covered with dust, but the windscreen is.
Wiring - I havea MIL connector on the roof allowing removal of the
roofrack together with the lamps. I drilled a hole in the roof just
above the A-post to fit the socket and ran the wiring in a convoluted
tubing along the A-post on the inside.

There's probably no way round it - you will always get reflection somewhere.

Hi Jeremy,
The lamps are recessed inside the housing of the Xlites for that very
reason, to keep the light off the bonnet when they are mounted overhead on
the roll-over bar or roof-rack. I will actually be mounting mine on the top
bar of my winch bumper which I am having coated with a colour close to the
body colour so as to make it look as un-aggressive as possible, and that
will be happening sometime next week so I won't be able to report back on
the efficiency of the lamps just yet.

Hi Jeremy,
We had fun and games with the spots on Tony Steele's 80 which did a great
job of lighting up the bonnet and dust on the screen.
The hood on the x-eng spots look like they should do the job - in the
past I have come across a similar design for pencil spots for night time
shooting and it worked well.

I remember years ago as a kid in Kenya watching the East African Safari
Rallye as it was then know - it regularly came past our farm in the Solai
valley, near Nakuru - at night. Very exciting and I seem to remember the
banks of spots on the front of the cars but also 1 at the base of each A
pillar. These spots had a snoot to keep light off the screen. I'll have
pictures somewhere. All cars had matt black bonnets too. I think I'm right
in saying that lights there are now illegal.
I have 2 hefty IPF spots mounted in the conventional mounts on my ARB winch
bars. But would like something higher, etc.
I seem to remember the other Jeremy - Bundubasher - improvised some sort of
hood/visor for his roof mounted lights.

Yes, I think they are illegal for on-road use.

Hi Jeremy,
In the end Tony got a sheet of metal welded horizontally on to the
bottom of each light, not the neatest job, but it worked.
We had for a while been looking for the 'sun shade' that you
occasionally see on the top of LC windscreens which would serve the
purpose with the lights as well as reduce the glare from the sun in the
front, but couldn't find any suppliers ourside of Aus.
