Looking for cheap sources for various parts....

Hi All,
I'm planning a major service on my 80 next month and beyond dealers and
Milners was wondering if any of you have come across good alternative
sources for:
Timing belt and tensioner.
Valve Shims
Big end bearings
The cars got 144k on the clock and whilst I'll be selling it later this
year it is long overdue some TLC so I'll be getting the fuel injectors
and pump serviced and recalibrated and whilst I am there I will be
replacing the timing belt and tensioner as well as re-shimming the
valves.
Whilst I am there I'll also be tackling the big end bearings and
possibly replacing the front disks, CVs and front wheel bearings along
with a full fluid and filter change.
It should keep me out of trouble for a couple of days ;-)

Hi Julian,
If the car is for sale (but not to any one reading this list :) I
suppose Milner offers pattern parts cheaper than other suppliers on
the continent (NL, B) who sell either Toyota parts for less than local
dealers, or get their stock from Oz suppliers.

Hi Roman,
I'll use Milners for most things they supply but they don't appear to do
things like BEB shells, valve shims etc.
Who would you recommend in Europe? - would ideally be looking for quick
turnaround, don't really want to take it off the road for more than a
week.
As for selling it, I will be taking off the suspension lift and tarting
it up a bit with a view to getting as much as I can for it so wouldn't be
offering it as a bargain to any listers - it will make an ideal Chelsea
tractor! It's amusing how much people can be swayed by a clean leather
interior and new carpets, etc. The more I can sell it for the more I
have to spend kitting out the next one ;-)

Julian,
Quoting from my experience, AAI can get you almost anything, most of
it from stock. They sourced for me a new crankshaft in a day.
Make sure you discuss with them the preferred payment method because
they don't take credit cards and bank transfers cost a lot.

Actually looking back at this I see Milner do more than I had
anticpated.
Does anyone here know where they source their Big End Bearings from?

If you'd have asked that last week I could have looked on the box mine
came in but I went to the tip on Monday and so did the box I'm afraid.
Why not just ask them?
Jon.

Hi Jon,
Will do, but recall the different makes and what Milner supply being
discussed on one of the list at some and thought someone might
remember.
Perhaps it was back on the 80s list going way back to Martin Lee's
posts on the subject.

Julian,
I read on the Australian site some time ago, probably a year,
that Marten at AAI uses Toyota bearing shells as you can control the
oil gap better. There are Six sizes, most pattern ones dont give this
choice.

On the subject of big ends, I forgot to tell the list that the 3rd 80 we
had them changed on they were fine so that's 2 out of the 3 were like
new but 1 was at deaths door.

This is my understanding also, that the spec varies according to your
chassis number. For this reason i will buy toyota bearings when the time
comes... I rang Toyota for a quote, but could not get a quote because i
didn't have the chassis number handy at the time. For this reason, I
question how pattern bearings can perform as well.

Is the BEB problem equally as bad on the 24 valve engine?

Hi Frederick,
Japanese diesel vehicles (especially direct injection) that are serviced
and use a engine oil with a calcium level (a detergent & strong bearing
pacifier) of 3000ppm or higher very rearly if ever have bearing
problems. OEM oils in japan typically have 3200-4500ppm calcium levels
most oils designed primarly for the US diesel truck market are no
calcium and 500-1200+ magnesium instead due to the different internal
engine design as far as I know magnesium has no bearing pacifying affects.
In relation to OEM brg's Maarten posted a trick he uses is to check the
OEM sizes from the block and crank numbers and then go one size larger
as this allows for a little crank wear or bedding in and reduces the oil
clearance 1-2 tenths of 1 thou (sorry I still think of journal
clearances in imperial).
Cheers,
Craig.
