LPG vs Diesel

I was going off LPG before the current price escalations started but now
it=92s not looking too shabby at all. I=92m currently paying 50p / L for LPG and
rung at about 14mpg, taking diesel to be =A31.30 / L and assuming 28mpg on
diesel I=92m now running at about 25% lower fuel costs c.f. diesel at standard
price.

Quite impressed now.

=A3100 @ 133p/litre =3D 75.2 litres =3D 16.56 gallons
In summer it does 29 mpg on long journeys, or about 27.5 pottering about/short journeys, so between 455 and 480 miles. In winter I'd be down at the low end of that range all the time (I think the diesel engine is over-cooled in our climate).
On a long trip I normally reckon on about 500 miles to an 80 litre tank-full, or 520 miles if I've been light-footed and I leave it till the little red light is really nagging at me.
I don't normally drive that fast - on the motorway I tend to set the cruise control to about 67 mph which is a tad under 2400rpm. If I up that to 70mph I lose at least 2 mpg, or maybe more, it's hard to be more precise. I guess that's not surprising: 5% more speed should reduce mpg by at least 10%.
The best I've ever had was 31.5, 32.1 and 31.1 mpg on three consecutive tanks full while on holiday in France. But that was on good diesel (it seems to like the Total Excellium stuff), in hot weather and driving in a seriously laid-back fashion on French "D" roads (top speed 50 mph).

Thanks Chris, just checking my arithmetic as I've had such a pig of a day
I'm not sure that my mind can cope with even simple arithmetic any more!
About right, my tank holds 70L LPG and that gives me 220 miles or
thereabouts with a light right foot, about =A335. The big downside is the lack
of range with LPG and having to plan journeys with LPG stations in mind - OK
on French motorways but not in many other places.

What setup are you running with LPG, Pete?
A good friend of mine has Mitsubishi L200 and has run LPG since new
and swears by it. There are some very cheap petrol powered 4x4's
around right now...

It was professionally installed soon after I bought the cruiser several
years ago. It's a single point injection (i.e. LPG goes into the inlet
manifold rather than injected into each cylinder as in multipoint injection)
setup controlled by a Leonardo management ECU.
I elected to put the tank in the load space so it takes up one rear seat
space rather than any form of underslung tank. It's a 90L volume tank which
holds 72L at capacity.
Switchover from petrol to LPG is not very satisfactory as it works on engine
rev's not time or temperature. As soon as the engine revs to 2000 rpm and
then falls back below that figure it switches over. Hence you can start the
engine and blip the throttle resulting in immediate changeover - this is not
good for the engine as both engine and LPG evaporator must reach normal
operating temperature before using LPG otherwise neat liquid (rather than
vapourised) LPG is injected resulting in uneven burning and hot-spots; this
is what eventually blew my engine. Also you need to run petrol as well as
LPG otherwise the injectors gum up and you'll eventually find that it won't
run on petrol at all without replacing the injectors. I let it warm up for 3
- 5 miles on petrol and occasionally I run a full tank of petrol with a
bottle of injector cleaner through.
There's a manual switchover switch on the dash also so that Petrol only can
be selected.
Downsides are slightly reduced power and worse MPG compared to petrol and
loss of luggage space to the tank and there are not many LPG filling
stations around. Upsides are much cheaper (I pay 50p / L for LPG), no London
Congestion Charge if you register it as an LPG converted vehicle and better
emissions quality which helps on the MOT.
If you can live with the negatives then it's highly recommended.
